Will an older smart TV affect streaming?

Netflix doesn’t play worth a damn on my TV. It’ll buffer and a lot of the time just stay buffering indefinitely. But when I try and watch on my iPhone I have zero issues. I have the best WiFi available. Anyone else experience this? I have a TCL smart tv that’s probably 6 years old or so.

Older smart TV’s are usually slow AF and finicky. You are better off just buying a new Fire Stick, Roku, or Apple TV and connecting it to another HDMI input. I have two recently purchased Smart TV’s - Visio and a Samsung. Neither are fast enough for my tastes. I have an Amazon Cube connected to one and a 4K Apple TV connected to the other. Overall, I love the speed and UI of the Apple TV best. I think a ROKU is the best option for a budget add-on.

The older tv could be causing your issues. Go through your tv settings and make sure there aren’t any updates you need to manually download. Also make sure Netflix is updated, May even need to delete and reinstall if your TV allows for that

Before you deleted, if make sure your tv allows you to upload/install new apps by trying to install some random app then later deleting

You may have great wifi at the router, but if you have an “older” smart tv, then it probably has older wifi that’s. It would be unlikely that it’s a network issue, though.

For the tv to run Netflix, it has to have a small processor. It was never meant to do much. And whoever wrote the app eventually stopped optimizing it as newer tvs and newer versions of Netflix came about. If there is an update available for either the TV or the app, make sure you’ve updated it. But it’s possible that, although the TV itself has many good years of service left as a display, the computer/“smart” features aren’t up to snuff with what’s out there.

You’ll likely be quite happy with a FireTV/roku/AppleTV/androidTV box, and you’ll probably notice a significant upgrade in experience.

I have never actually thought about this, but how do apps on a smart TV update? Is there something I have to do? I get notices of my Sony TV updates, but am clueless about the apps.

The older hardware definitely impacts the quality. To what extent differs but it's safe to assume it's aged out or close to it.

It’s device specific. I don’t really use any smart tv apps presently. But LG tends to update before launching from within the app itself.
Some (older Sony model that I had) only updated the whole TV firmware and someone had the limited app updates in there if I remember correctly (still use the tv daily as a display. Haven’t opened a settings menu on it in years).


There’s no broad answer to the question unfortunately.
