We are planning our summer vacation next year and decided on Cape Cod for a week. I didn’t realize how many little towns there were on the Cape. For anyone that has been which is the best town for price, location and things to do. We don’t mind driving a little bit to the beach. Also is June or July better to go? I see it’s cheaper in June but didn’t know about the weather. We will have our two daughters with us ages 17 and 7.

We stayed in Hyannis (Anchor In) which has the ferries to both Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket if you wanted to take a day trip to either

Chatham is nice too but probably more crowded and more expensive

Everything is pretty close so no matter where you stay you can hit all the little towns

The Yarmouth boardwalk is cool

I can't speak to them all but would suggest somewhere centralized like Orleans. It gives you access to day trips north and south. We liked having access to Nauset Beach and the Bay (which was a bit warmer).

Still weird to see seals swimming nearby

I posted this to another thread a few months ago:

There are four regions to Cape Cod, which you can find on a quick Images search. Personally, I'd go Lower or Outer. Provincetown aside, Outer is not as densely-populated + has much better beaches. My dad has a summer spot in Truro that is perfect for a quiet, peaceful "retreat," but still just ~15 minutes to P-Town for dinner, drinks, etc. Maybe check out some homes in Truro and Wellfleet, but will caution rentals go quick and you might see many require a week stay.

July is better, but you'll notice price increases each successive month through August.

Schools in this area are in session until mid/late June, which is why it is cheaper. The weather can be cool in June still (not always). July or August weather wise would definitely be better if the beach if what you are looking for.

We'll be in Harwich next week for a few days (we have a 14 y/o daughter) - will let you know how that town is.

Please do! Are you in a house or hotel? The prices are crazy but everything is going up these days. When you get back let me know where you stayed and how you liked it as well. Because we are looking at booking soon to try to get the best deal.

Random FYI, but my dad does rent his Truro home during the summer months (winter, too, technically but no one goes during that time ). It's not available every week, because we all use it, but I'm happy to get you a rental link. Would prefer not to toss it on here, if we find some way to link up. Can't promise there's any sort of deal because it's easy to make a pretty penny during summertime.

That would be great if you could email it to me at lsugrldej8@gmail.com

I’ll look into it to see if it’s in our price range. Can you give me some info on fun places to go or things to do?

If you’re a beer person, Treehouse in Sandwich is a must.

We're staying here because we wanted to be closer to town, but you can use the beach resort for free as a guest at the inn.

I got you - will text my dad in the AM to make sure I have the right link.

As for things to do, I spend almost all my time in Outer Cape (Truro, Wellfleet, P-Town). Can put together a list of beaches, restaurants and things to do soon!

We stayed in Chatham and thought it was a convenient, quick drive to pretty much any other spot on the Cape. There was a bike trail right behind our Airbnb that we used to explore the island and plenty food/grocery options close.
I’d recommend bouncing around to the different beaches too. In one morning we went to a crystal clear beach, a beach with seals swimming off the coast and the foggiest beach I’ve ever been too, all within an easy drive from Chatham. Pretty cool to experience that kind of variety in one area.

We stayed in the Yarmouth area last year. We didn't stay on the water, but we hit Ptown, Truro, Chatham, Hyannis and several random beaches while there. Ptown was interesting, very busy main street. Chatham was probably the nicest main street. Most of the places were visited were 20-30 minute drives with the exception of Ptown. It was probably about a hour drive.

We went the last week of June last year, and one that that kinda surprised me was how dead it was. In talking to some of the locals, they said their summer doesn't really kick off until the first of July.

How was the weather during that time? It looks like there is a significant price difference for some places from June to July. We aren’t planning on fully going into the water but just walking along the beaches or the tide pools would fun. We want to do a whale watching tour as well.

It was awesome. A little cool in the morning, but upper 70's during the day. We walked the beaches a good bit and the water was pretty cold, but there were kids out there swimming and playing. Clearly they weren't from south LA

Yeah the water is always cold here, just to varying degrees. You either get used to it, or you don’t swim. I tend to not swim.

Centerville is a great place to stay. Can walk to Craigville Beach from the Craigville Beach Inn. Four Seas ice cream is a must visit, and youi're also very close to Hyannis.

Falmouth isn't too far away for a day trip to Martha's Vineyard, which is worth it. The Dockside Inn is owned by John Tiernan, an LSU grad, if you want to stay the night there. The Dockside Inn is in Oak Bluff - lots to do and see there. Edgartown is also amazing.
