Couples Trip to the Northeast

Wife and I want to take a "beat the heat" summer trip to enjoy some better weather and 4-5 days without the kids. We have minimal ideas on where to go .
Must haves are decent weather for late July. We are pretty laid back, we like like to walk around, drive to sight see, eat, shop, drink etc.
I haven't spent much time in the Northeast, but our initial ideas were something like Nantucket, Vermont, etc.
A "resort" with a spa would be nice for the wife, but a cozier place that has walkable amenities and restaurants is cool too.
If prefer to keep the cost under $1k per night, but in my limited searching I know these places are expensive.
Any ideas welcome!

You can scratch Nantucket off the list
That place is insanely expensive to stay, it might be worth a day trip but I would go to Martha’s Vineyard over Nantucket for a day trip
Maine and Vermont would be much better trip and cheaper and a lot more things to do and see

Check out the Inn by the Sea in Portland, ME. If not, look into the Woodstock Inn in VT.

Rhode Island, Maine or NH along the coast if you like the ocean. Boston obviously is great for big city life and is close enough for day trips elsewhere too.

I’d also consider Chatham Bars Inn in Chatham, MA out on the Cape. Has a spa and is a very cool place. Lots to do. Added benefit of being a short drive to Harwich Port where you can get the ferry to Nantucket for a day trip. Disagree with other poster on Nantucket versus Martha’s Vineyard; my preference has always been Nantucket. Can also hit Provincetown, do whale watch tours, etc. Inn can be pricey but from your post it seems like you expect that. Might can also consider breaking up trip and doing a few days in Boston on front or back of stay in Chatham. Plenty of data on this board for what to do, where to stay in Boston.

I’ve been to Nantucket and MV, but I’ve always preferred Block Island. I’m a big fan of the Spring House there. We stay there a lot. In that area I enjoy Watch Hill in Rhode Island and Sag Harbor. You can pretty easily take the ferry from Block to New London and then to Sag Harbor. If you’ve never been to the Ocean House in Watch Hill that is quite the treat. Taylor Swift has a home two doors down from the hotel.

In VT got to Manchester Center Equinox Resort, Burlington is nice in the summer on the Lake
Check out mid coast Maine Camden/Rockland/Rockport Samoset Resort, Norembuga Inn, Go to Bar Harbor stay at the Bar Harbor Inn explore Acadia National Park
A lot of nice places in NH the White mountains, North Conway, Portsmouth Rye NH on the Seascoast Great Autograph by Marriott property there blanking on the name it’s technically Newcastle NH old inn, a great location on the coast.

I’m heading to Rockland, ME to check out the Maine Lobster Festival this year, which might fit your bill. Quaint looking BnB kinda town but minutes to bougie resort/spas in Camden, etc.

Cape Cod is alt better than MV and Nantucket. I’d skip all three though and so route 1 along the Maine coast all the way up to Bay of Fundi.

Block Island is awesome and often overlooked. Easy to get to if flying into providence.

Thanks everyone for the advice. We decided on Vermont for our trip. The coastal areas were picked over for lodging, and we'd rather avoid their peak season. We found a cool Air B N B in the mountains. We will drive to Woodstock, Stowe and some of the other small towns. Flights to the NorthEast were way more challenging than I thought. Ultimately the Burlington, VT airport had the best flights and we were able to get 1st class tickets for only $200 more than regular.

Maine could be a great option for what you're looking for. Bar Harbor has a nice mix of walkability, good food, and easy access to Acadia National Park for some amazing views and light hiking. Weather is perfect in late July, and you can find cozy inns or resorts with spas.
