I’ve never flown spirit, it have a flight with them coming up. Their website says you can bring one “personal item” for free measuring 18” x 14” x 8”. I have a normal sized backpack which, according to manufacturer specs, measures 22.5” x 10” x 10”. I don’t anticipate it will be packed full, so I’m going to try to cinch it down as much as possible, but is spirit going to charge me a checked bag fee?

They're not going to break out a tape measure or anything.

They actually have little bins next to the ticket counters with exact measurements they can place your bags in and if they don't fit, they will make you check it.

It is VERY sporadic in what they check and weight requirements. In NOLA, for instance, they didn't give a frick and didn't check anything. In Chicago they were sticklers down to the last ounce, not even joking.

You should be fine, but honestly it depends on how county the gate agent happens to be that day

Right but if it's a soft backpack and he can make it fit in the bin then he should be good.

I've flown Chicago to Nola on Spirit multiple times and never had this issue in Chicago or in Nola.

I always bring a backpack and when it is stuffed I'm positive it's bigger than the size of that bin, but they've never checked. I don't think it's airport dependent, just dependent on the person at the gate I guess.

That's what I've read. I think I'm going to roll with it.
