My sisters and brother do a group vacation every 3 years. Nieces and nephews are invited so we range from some people with money to budget travelers. We have done a cruise and Gatlinburg. Both of those are future options, but I want other suggestions primarily in the South. Right now I’m thinking about the Outer Banks. Resorts are also an option. Probably be a 3-5 day trip.

I enjoyed Wintergreen Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.
Lots of trails and overlooks.
2 golf courses.
Tennis and pickleball.
Swimming pool.

i've been having a hard time finding good water side cabins. what do you usually use? vrbo, airbnb or homeaway?
any specific houses you'd recommend

Search for Gruene, TX instead of New Braunfels.
Here's one that sleeps 12 right on the river where you could chill out on the porch and watch the tubes float by.

There's also the Treehouse resort right on the river.

Or if you need luxury accomodations Hideout on the Horseshoe

What time of year?
Beach would be doable as there are big VRBOs that can house a bunch of people and the split costs makes it more doable for the whole group. Beach provides activity for everyone. Anywhere along the panhandle from orange beach Al through St. George Island, FL would work. Plenty of nice spots along the Eastern coast of FL. too
If winter somewhere up in the N.C. mountains would be nice.

Most likely Summer. Would need more than just the beach to keep some happy. Area attractions and such.

Most OBX owners prefer to rent for 7 days in prime season.
There are activities other than just sitting on the beach or swimming. Mostly historical places, museums, lighthouse, but you can hang glide, para sail, fish. Not a lot of putt putt or Myrtle Beach type activitie.
We rented a house at Lake Glenville which is near Cashiers, NC a few years ago. It was great, there were 13 of us. Don’t know if there are bigger houses.

Not in the south, but New Mexico/Arizona are great family vacation states.
New Mexico has Santa Fe, Route 66, White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, Cloudcroft, and a ton of great little towns to explore. You can scuba dive the “Big Blue Hole” in Santa Rosa.
Arizona has the lakes, canyons, Navajo country, Route 66, Antelope Canyon (awesome btw), mountains.

For 3-5 days? You are moving the goal posts on us now. You started off basically asking about off the beaten path places and now you are basically just asking us for the normal popular vacation places.
How about Orlando? Not really kidding. It may be expensive but its great for large groups.

Jackson Hole area. Stay across the border in Idaho. Close, save a ton. We stayed on the Snake River, in a 5 br house. Would definitely recommend. Look in Victor or Driggs ID for a place to stay.
