Parking tips at New Orleans (MSY)

It's my first trip out of New Orleans aiport since the renovation. My questions are:
- I'm flying SWA. Is parking easy to find near the checkin terminals?
- How early should I arrive to get through that hellacious process of security?

The long-term and short-term parking are both basically the same distance from the entrance, I prefer long-term.
Depends, do you have precheck? If not, I would give yourself 90 mins before your flight.

Long term parking is close and easy but expensive. I’ve parked there for most of my flights at the new airport. Security has been surprisingly quick when I’ve been even when we flew out 4th of July weekend.

Park as close as you can to the terminal. Once SWA cancels your flight you wont have far to walk back.

We park in the economy lot at the old terminal. It's $12 a day vs $20 long term at the new airport. Shuttles are waiting there and on return. The little bit of extra time it takes is worth the savings to me. Maybe I'll change my mind if it gets busy and shuttles aren't sitting there ready to go, but that hasn't been my experience.

I usually park in the short term parking tower. It's linked directly to the terminals on the 4th floor.

Walking right into the Terminal >>>> Shuttle from old Airport Garage having to potentially engage with the NOLA-ese

I’ve found Precheck has been a shite show and no real time saver the last few months. Sign up for Clear if ya can

We recently flew out of NOLA on Southwest for the first time since renovations so I feel equipped to address this.
Whatever you do, allow extra time for traffic, particularly if you’re arriving there in the evening. The traffic around Veterans and the Interstate at Loyola and Williams at that time is just incredible. We used US Park on Veterans because we were worried there wouldn’t be vacancies in Long-Term parking. I would not recommend this. While there are shuttles to get you to the terminal, there aren’t enough and they don’t run frequently enough.
The airport is very nice but in typical NOLA fashion, it looks like some things were not thought through very well…they clearly need better road infrastructure around the airport to address the traffic congestion and perhaps more employees at security to improve efficiency there. The lines to get through Security were very long and did not move very quickly.
I guess the best advice I have is however much time you think you need, I’d add 30 minutes. If you have a friend in NOLA, I’d consider parking your car there and taking an Uber if that’s workable.

Short Term at MSY is 22/day, Long Term is 20/day, so not much difference. Long term is a bit further walk in that you have to go down to first floor, walk across a traffic lane, then when you enter terminal, go up to the third floor if you need to check-in. From short term, you simply take the garage elevator to four and then walk across the catwalk to get to the third floor of the terminal (third floor id ticketing, second floor is gates, first floor is bag claim).
Southwest now has the self-tagging baggage stations like most real airports do (but the old terminal did not).
Security at MSY is insanely hit or miss. The longest I've ever waited at the new terminal is 20 minutes. I know of people who have waited over an hour.
Personally, I like to arrive at the parking garage 2 hours before my flight. Gives me time to find a spot, get into the terminal, check my bag if needed, get though security, and no worries whatsoever. Many times I'm through security with 90 min before flight. That's when I go find a bar and have a beer and just relax. I'd rather wait at the airport with a beer, then feel rushed, but that's just me.
Other parking options are the Economy garage (garage at old terminal, $12/day) and the Park and Fly on Vets. I've never done either one but I think I am going to try the economy garage for my flight next month, as my flight there and home are both mid-day.

The airport’s website has a parking tab that shows how many parking spacing are in each garage. How accurate it is, I don’t know.

Word of warning, if you do park in economy brace yourself - literally! - for the shuttle ride down Bainbridge. One of the worst streets in the area.

This is the truth. Do rental car shuttles take the same route? If so, that’s embarrassing.

Yes they do! And if you don’t notice the horrible condition of the street it’s because you’re looking out the window at the wonderful views and wondering what Third World country you’ve landed in. What a glorious initial impression the city makes on those money spending visitors! Unfortunately that impression is reinforced in many areas throughout the city.
