VRBO Bahamas - Wire Transfer owner?
Posted on 2/23/18 at 4:35 pm

Taking the family to the Bahamas and renting a house through VRBO. Called the VRBO representative and gave them all my payment information. Got a phone call from the owner saying I need to wire transfer the money due to international banks not excepting my credit card payment. The home has 30+ excellent reviews And everything homeowner sent me looks legit.
Not too keen on wiring money to this person and bypassing VRBO. Have any of you run into this before and is this normal when dealing with VRBO Bahama or out of country rentals? Am I crazy for even thinking about wiring money to this person or is this standard operation?
Any feedback is appreciated

I have never encountered that.
I'd be VERY leery.
Any of the reviews/comments mention wiring money?

International bank not accepting your credit card? What is that even supposed to mean? The bank doesn’t accept your CC, the merchant/landlord/owner accepts your CC. If he/she isn’t set up to take CCs, this should have been disclosed from the beginning. Offer to pay via PayPal or other third party service that will take your CC and send the funds to the recipients bank.
Do not wire funds. Once transferred, your money is gone. It is the equivalent of handing someone an envelope of cash in advance. You have no recourse to get it back if the deal goes bad (like the house being grossly misrepresented, already occupied, or filthy, etc).
Be very very leery of this. There is absolutely no reason for a wire transfer.

Thanks for replies. This was on the VRBO payment page from home owner:
Spoke to VRBO and they said since payment discussion happened through VRBO site, I am protected. Also said person is trusted renter and passed all background checks. Whatever doesn't make me feel any safer. Will look somewhere else.

When you click the button below and follow the instructions on the site to make a payment you will be paying your VRBO booking fee via credit card and our payment is done by Wire transfer as VRBO cannot accept online CC payments for foreign bank accounts. The site does not make this very clear as you will think the entire payment has gone on your card. But if you look further down your confirmation email it will tell you about the wire transfer. All of the instructions for this are at the bottom of our rental agreement.

I used FlipKey a while back (similar to VRBO), and it was all credit card, no wire transfer. Not sure what protection VRBO can offer you if the owner already has your money....is VRBO going to give you a refund if things aren’t satisfactory? Owner could set up a cc receiving account of his own, but prob doesn’t want to pay the transaction fee.
I rented in Paris 3-4 years ago....paid a deposit in advance via cc, then merely handed the apt manager a regular personal check upon arrival.
Skipping the cc company means you shoulder all the risk.

The same thing happened to us. We’re going to Bermuda in March and had to wire the homeowner the money. My wife called HomeAway and they told her the renter had been a member for years and has never had an issue. We went ahead and wired the money. I’ll report back when we get back and let y’all know if we got conned or not.

Good luck Dtiger and thanks for your reply
I asked about paying other than wire transfer. Owners reply:

Unfortunately VRBO doesn’t give foreign bank account holders and my Bahamian bank any online options. I really wish they did as it would be so much easier for me and for you of course. So sorry about that. I do sometimes accept personal checks but I won’t be back in the states to pick it up for another month . I’ll call you when I’m home to discuss possibly transferring to my mother's US account.

We've done this twice with vrbo on Eleuthera.

I have multiple properties on Vrbo, DO NOT wire money.
They have multiple other resources to accept credit cards if not through vrbo. I don't know about that, but I rented an place in London on Vrbo and they took my credit card.
The owner could get PayPal or any number of other ways. I mean can you not book a hotel in Bermuda without Wiring money? Lol.
If it's legit it's literally the 1% time wiring money for a vrbo is legit.
Considering probably 80% or more of their business in Bermuda is Americans, they could get an American bank account and wire it in between accounts.

This makes it seem even more like a scam, they try to act like they'll try an option and then let you know it doesn't work. So they make it more personal so you think it's legit.
If she truly had an option like this ( and if legit they certainly would have multiple options it's 2018) then there's absolutely no reason for them not to use another option.

Reviews doesn't mean much fwiw. You can fake them.
I could make up a place in the Caribbean that rented for $10k a week, make a bunch of fake reviews for 2-3 years. Then one summer get 'wire transfers' for $100k or more and peace out. It would take all of about 10 hours over the course of 2 years to do.

Where did you stay on Eleuthera? My wife and I honeymooned there a little over 10 years ago. Hoping to go back soon.

Just getting back from Bermuda. Everything was as advertised and no issues with the rental.

That's just strange. Sounds like some here have done it, but it's hard for me to believe this day and age they have no way else of accepting payment besides wire transfer.
I would absolutely never wire transfer money for something like that.

They absolutely have other options. Hell yeah its risky as hell. Its easily the number 1 scam in vacation rentals right now. There's just absolutely no reason to pay outside of credit cards or check.

We like to stay on Winding Bay. The beach is a couple of miles long and only about 7 houses on the entire bay. Even though it is on the Atlantic side, the bay is protected by the reef, so it's great for the kids to snorkel and swim without worrying about them.
