Second base might be the most contested spot on the team. Dugas, Merrifield, Nippolt and whoever loses the SS battle.

Milazzo is the best right now, and the learning curve for a freshman catcher is high.

Ross and Gibbs started as freshmen.

Link or source? Not questioning you, I’m just always starving for baseball info to read. Thanks for everything you do.

Okay? The learning for a freshman catcher is high. That two guys were able to do it (to varying degrees of success) doesn't mean it's not difficult. Papierski actually made the majors and couldn't start full time as a freshman.

I believe it was Hunt Palmer on twitter. It was a reputable source, I just don't remember where I saw it.

Thompson is the SS. Preseason surgery really set him back last year. I think Paxton Kling will play left more often than not. Jobert & Pearson are options. Dugas and Guidry are your 2B options. Four catchers will play in February. I expect Milazzo and Neal to be the guys in May.

No one here knows, and no one with access seems interested in asking.

I think he's going to sign with the Brewers.

A guy who also couldn't start full time behind the plate in his first year in the program, even coming from JUCO.

Because it's not easy.

And Gibbs was actually a beast as a freshman, at the plate and behind it.

Ross on the other hand didnt have a great 1st year here to say the least. Dude struggled mightily at the plate (1st year of BBCOR bats) and was mediocre behind the plate at best. Ross just had no real competition when he came in 2011. Gibbs just left the job open after starting 3 years here and Ross comes in to compete against another true freshman and a JUCO kid (Snik). So it was basically his for the taking.

Neal still has a long ways to go to take the job from Milazzo. The fact we know Milazzo is excellent behind the plate and is a 4th year guy here is going to be tough to overcome if he's even slightly serviceable at the plate itself. It's not really an indictment on Neal, he just has to REALLY show out to get the starting catcher role. At worst he's probably the mid-week guy. The situation is just a lot tougher on Neal considering what we do have (2 experienced catchers on the team in Milazzo and Travinski).

I'm assuming he meant right on this. Seems like everything we have seen so far is Pearson playing LF. He has played there every scrimmage so far. I think RF will be Kling, Ruddell, Stevenson, Jobert battle. Maybe a freshman platoon if Ruddell is consistent and Kling plays well.

Neal is serviceable for a freshman. He’s having to adjust to consistently catching 94+. It’s not easy even for someone like Milazzo.

Two things though:

1) Neal should be in high school right now. He only just turned 18. So he’s young and will be good for us for 3 full years.

2) Milazzo is showing signs of real life at the plate this fall. I’m talking patient ABs and hard hit line drives. He’s had a few over 100 mph. Considering the pitching he’s facing, this is a really good sign.

Does anyone know if there are scrimmages this weekend that will be open to the public?

Milazzo would stab someone for Ross’s freshmen numbers with BBCOR bats
