My sister lives in Austin, and always complains how bad the Louisiana food is over there. She spotted this today on reddit

This Fish Basket was $22.63 (before tax and tip)

Reddit Post on this Insanity

From what I've gathered, massive amounts of money could be made by the first person to open proper Cajun restaurants, Louisiana Seafood joints, and poboy shops

I’d show my arse if they took my money before giving that to me. I don’t like conflict but $22 for that and I’m showing my arse.

She’s right. There are two legit places, Evangeline Cafe and Stuffed. Everything else is some weird take on Cajun food.

I've gotten around this country a good bit on motorcycle road trips over the years and it is almost universally true that out of state restaurants that claim to be "Authentic Cajun" fall WAY short of what I've grown up eating and now cooking.

Many places simply think if you add Tony's or Slap Ya Mama and a bit of hot sauce to any dish it becomes "Cajun Cuisine" and nothing could be further from the truth-----as we who live here know.

As for the pic in the OP, that looked like a couple dried up dog turds and would be highway robbery at $5.

Papadeaux is fine for what it is. But I don’t consider it Cajun. More a Texan’s take on Cajun.

I agree….it’s more like a Piccadilly serving Cajun food not bad but not great either

That place deserves to go out of business, and I am one who hates seeing people go out of business. That's theft right there.

Then again, how many people go back to this place? If they have returning customers, well, a fool and his money...

I’ve been to exactly one Cajun restaurant out of state that was decent, the only reason was James Graham was the chef and proprietor in Tampa Bay area.

Not going to say Pappadeaux’s tastes bad. I doesn’t.

But it is overpriced, bad imitation “Cajun” food. Who the frick in Acadiana pours crawfish etouffee over “dirty rice”?

That is so true. We live in Georgia and my Cajun wife's rule is to not order gumbo in a restaurant east of the Atchafalaya Basin. I'm sure there are exceptions and it's kind of a joke... but kinda not too.

I’ll add Cypress Grill to this list. The owner is from Baton Rouge and they make solid food. The poboys are legit!

Lil Easy just opened. I’ll give them a try in a few months, but that Reddit post is pretty damning.

Uptown Sports Club is probably the worst I’ve had. It’s a great location and they did a beautiful job with the building, but the food is mediocre and expensive as hell.

That’s ridiculous.

When I lived in Austin Stuffed Cajun Market and Quality Seafood were my go to spots for Louisiana food.

Piccadilly, at one point, had probably one of the best versions of crawfish etuffee you'd ever find in a restaurant setting.

Just noticed that's what this was in the OP. Owner there is from BR too. I think he's been running various places in Austin for about 30 years.

To be fair, the rest of the pics in that Reddit post don't look nearly as bad as the one posted above. The oysters and shrimp poboy look decent enough.

The table by the sink in the supposed dining room seems rather odd, though.

Just a 100 yards down and across the street from that place is Da Nada Cantina which is fantastic mexican food. Go there instead.
