This thread should be all about Hawkwind, they were basically the kings of space rock in the early 70's, starting with their 'In Search of Space' album. Pink Floyd's 'Astronomy Domine' from their first album with Syd Barrett. Can't forget 'Third Stone from the Sun' by Jimi Hendrix Experience. Should also mention German band, Amon Duul II- their 'Dance of the Lemmings' album is early space rock as well.

One of the first songs that popped into my head was Silver Machine, because of what you said above.. and its a great fricking song... but then I remembered it was about his bicycle...

Obscure, kinda quirky rock band that never really made it. Saw them open for King's X in a dive bar years ago. Been a fan ever since.
