Anyone else distracted by this in TROS? (Spoilers obviously)

What was the purpose of Merry from LOTR? Every scene I saw him in, I’m thinking “oh it’s Merry from LOTR.” Similar to Rose, you could literally remove every scene he is in and it would be inconsequential to the film.
I know celebs are probably Star Wars fans and want cameos in the films, but there are way better and discreet ways of doing it for the audience. They put him in focus for just about every scene he was in for such a minor and throwaway character. This was too much.

Odd. My first reaction post after seeing the movie was about how every time he was on screen I was immediately taken out of the moment with NOT PENNY'S BOAT.
It didnt occur to me that he was also Merry until I was in the car driving home.

Kerri Russell's character bothered me more. You have the only somewhat attractive actress in your cast wear a helmet the entire time? What's the point?

Agreed. In her instance, that character was created for toys to replace Phasma, who was also created to sell toys.

The second I saw him, I thought the same thing. Like Samuel L in episodes 1-3. The series is full of actors who you don’t recognize and then they throw in that one actor that just stands out.

Not really. He really did look like he was plucked from Lost and put right in the movie. And had a decent bit of screen time.

Yeah, Rogue One would have been 9/10 if they removed every scene with IP man and Forest Whitaker. IP man was cheesy and unbelievable, Whitaker was over the top and inconsequential. Keep the story going, don't focus on Jimmy Smits and Samuel L cameo's
