Skenes now has a splitter/sinker and it’s basically unhittable

Not sure when he developed it as I don’t remember him having it with LSU, but it’s nasty.

Might not have perfected that pitch and he was so dominant at LSU he really didn't need it

That's normal and healthy, and it's old school for pitchers to rely on heaters until they develop more before learning new pitches. It protects their arm more in the long term. Too many coaches abuse young pitchers these days like a rented mule to win games (teaching them these pitches too early), killing their long-term careers.

The splinker is nasty as hell and definitely didn’t exist in this form at LSU, if at all.

Don’t understand modern baseball. Dude had a no no into the 7th. Annnnnnd they yank him. Like he couldn’t have gone 9 more outs. Wtf.

He was at 100 pitches through 6. No reason to potentially wind up with 140 pitches trying to get a no-no.

It's 1 game of a 3000 game season, finishing a no-no means jack shite in the long run compared to the wear and tear it adds.

You don’t mortgage a future ace for 1 game

Completely and utterly disagree. That big boy? He’s not good for another 20? I mean come on. He was dealing.

What good would 20 pitches have done?

He needed three more innings to get the complete game, and finish the no hit bid.

At the pace he was going, he would have needed 45 pitches or so to finish the game.

Not to be completely merciless, but why do the Pirates care about long term ramifications? No chance they retain him once he's eligible for free agency. What are they preserving him for? The Yankees' or Dodgers' benefit?

Johan Santana 2012 game log

This is why teams don't push pitchers to chase unnecessary no hitters in the regular season. Santana threw a 134 pitch no hitter on 6/1/2012. That was his season high pitch count by 26. This was his 11th start of the season.

First 11 starts: 68 IP, 2.35 ERA, 2.79 FIP, 68/21 K/BB ratio

10 starts after that: 49 IP, 8.27 ERA, 5
89 FIP, 45/18 K/BB ratio

He never threw another pitch in the majors after that. Sean Newcomb got up to 140ish pitches chasing a no hitter in 2018 and was never the same pitcher again.

They're going to have him for another 6 years before he hits free agency. They're going to try and build a contender around Skenes, Jared Jones, and Mitch Keller over that time. If Skenes and Jones live up to their potential, having those three at the top of a pitching rotation is a hell of a place to start.

And I can go through MLB history and produce scads of 125+ pitch no-hit/CG outings by pitchers who went on to Hall of Fame careers.

If you throw fastballs, you can probably get by. It’s when you throw balls with movement that mess your arm up. Nolan Ryan threw with power and that’s why he was as durable as he was.
