One in the chamber or not?

I completed my assessment for my concealed carry license. I had a discussion with the instructor, a former cop. I expressed concern about keeping a live round in my firearm, a Sig P365, while holstered inside my waistband.
His response was it would be stupid not to, saying the extra second to rack the slide could be deadly in a sudden confrontation. He said I should spend time with the gun having it without one in the chamber, but with a full clip to get used to the weight, and practice pulling it out to the firing position from seated and standing positions at home, in my car, etc to get comfortable with it and proficient. I get this, but still, a live round ready to fire concerns me as unsafe. Should I be? Statistically, is this even an issue I should be concerned with?
I read the story this morning about the couple hijacked in Nashville, and the husband left dead, and I think, yeah, that had I been in that situation, I would want one in the chamber, and then I got to thinking, should I really keep it inside my waistband in the car, or have it more readily accessible? That story, and the one about the soldier from Fort Hood who shot and killed the protestor pointing an AR at him in Austin has me really thinking about this and I know there's quite a few here with years of experience to ask advice of. Is the ex-cop's advice solid ? I understand he's coming from an LE perspective.

A defense firearm with an empty chamber is, essentially, carrying a hammer around to defend yourself.

Round in the chamber.
Definitely have it more accessible...
Several magnet options available as well.

Always loaded. There have been test done and a man can make it to you from 20 ft before you can draw and aim. That's with you knowing he's coming. The time it takes for you to rack the slide adds even more time. I keep my pistol where I can get to it in my truck. Then holster it when I get out..

I do not keep one in the chamber. It’s nothing to cock the gun.
That’s my personal preference.

I am a LEO. Always keep one in the chamber.....always. What you need to make sure of is that you have a good inside the waistband holster.

Always 1 in the chamber, striker fire with no manual safety. That is the only way that makes sense.

The bad guy has a round in his chamber if you do not you’ve already lost the gunfight.

Why are you concerned about it being unsafe? Is it in a holster while on your pant’s waist? Practice removing like you were advised emphasizing keeping your finger off the trigger. The more you do it the better you’ll feel.
I was also worried at the beginning due to having kids. I thought of all those of freak scenarios involving them finding it. I developed a routine. If I’m carrying when I walk into the house, I go straight to my safe, close the door, clear the round, pop the magazine out, and lock in the safe.

Personally, when carrying, one on the chamber and safety off. I very rarely carry on my person, mainly just in the truck.
At home, safety goes back on, but that round stays where it is.

A 38 revolver: the VAST, VAST majority of self defense matters are resolved with 2-4 rounds and never have to worry about racking and virtually never a misfire...

i don't keep one in the chamber, for the same reasons you are questioning the practice of doing so. my buddies think like your instructor and give me the same shite this board will give us but I do what I feel most comfortable with and could care less what others think. Guns are no joke and if you are worried about a live round going off then you are better off not keeping a live round ready to go.

I struggle with this question as well.

What kind of safety(s) does it have? My Springfield XD9sc has 2, trigger and grip safeties. I have no qualms carrying with the gun in battery.

Every CC teacher I had or know, and every cop I know insist upon one in the pipe.
You’re not pulling unless life is on the line. Do you really want to take the time to rack the slide or worse extend a harmless paperweight out in front of you because you forget to in the dry mouthed rush of adrenaline?

Personally, I think you are making a mistake, however, it is your choice. What I normally suggest to someone that is not comfortable with keeping a round in the chamber on a semi-auto is maybe re-evaluating your carry sidearm and opt for a revolver.

Carry it in the back, so when you get scared and Barney Fife it out your pants you don’t subdue your little peepee.

Appendix carry for walking around, on the console while driving for handguns.

If you're worried about a live round going off you're too incompetent to be carrying at all..

Hell yes, keep one in the chamber. You don't want to be fricking and fumbling around trying to rack a round. You want to be aiming and shooting. Keep it simple.
