Morakniv Companion. You can do pretty much everything with it and it's only $17

If there was only one choice, what would it be?
A multi tool would seem to be the obvious choice, but if you assume a muli tool would be secondary to your "primary" knife and that the big knife would have to do everything, I think you would have to consider some fixed blade option.

So, this knocks out fixed blades for most folks and now you're at an inherent compromise - folding blade for carry convenience (sort of like all pistols are compromises over long guns). Serrated blades are great until they are dull and almost mandatory for cutting a lot of rope/cord/canvas. However, shitty when dull, difficult for most to sharpen and not great for primitive food service, bush craft, etc.
Any single tool is probably not going to be great at anything if it can do everything. So, your choice is a jack-of-all trades folding knife or a specialized tool for the most important task. I think a big, heavy folder with partial serrations is probably the answer (and I've carried those for many years), but a lightweight plain blade folder is probably going to be as useful (and more convenient) for 90% of folks who carry them.

I got the carbon steel because it holds an edge better than the stainless. The only issue is it will rust. Rather than keep it oiled, you can patina it with apple cider vinegar. It works really well.

Swiss army rangergrip. Can't tell you how many jams it gets me out of at work.

I carry a $20 smith and Wesson knife I got from academy. It’s not high quality or anything but after losing my beloved CRKT pocket knife, I decided to go cheap. Since it’s cheap I’ll probably never lose it.

Hours did we get this far without this reference?

My vote is a folder with a deep pocket clip. 3" to 3.5" blade.
I gravitate to un assisted flippers.

Cane Knife
I still can't stand the sight of a cane knife.
My dad made us trim sidewalks, driveway and the house with a cane knife.
I still have a scar on my left foot from when I was instructing my little sister on how to use it properly.

I actually have a few of these of different makes. I kinda sorta collect them, I guess.

Benchmade Griptilian.
Had 1st one for 3 years and lost it, was so happy with it I got another.
The day the new one arrived I found the 1st.
So I have an expensive backup now.

Same knife I usually carry. I have the full sized one and the mini.

There are. I've never really bought from them, though. That ZT 0223 is available at BladeHQ.com. They're a brick and mortar store, as well, so they're likely legit.
Smokey Mountain Knife Works has some ZT stuff, but not that one. They're legit, of course. I've bought from them online and in person.

I have gotten to the point with knives now that when i hear Damascus blade, i roll my eyes. It’s become such a thing where I’m like whoopty doo.
99.9% of people use a knife for the same thing everyone else does and that’s the occasional use.
Knife people are like watch people. You just want to tell them to shut the frick up

How many have you been through, and what were the breaking points?
They make one like this that is half serrated. I haven't broke one yet they are a tough knife. I have carried this style for at least 5 years. They were about $8.00 on Amazon until just recently.

A good sharp fillet knife will get most jobs done from skinning to deboning to slicing vegetables if needed
