Cigarette vending machines. Me and my friends would go to the hotel lobby and by smokes with our quarters. We had to be fast because the owner would run us off. We had no idea what we were buying. We smoked everything from Virginia Slims to Salems.

When I was about 12-13 we were at the hospital visiting someone. While there, momma gave my brother and I some money to go down to the cafeteria to get something to eat. First thing we noticed was the cigarette vending machine. If I remember correctly I bought a pack of Vantage and my brother bought a pack Pall-Mall. I can’t remember for sure, but it seems the price was like 50 cents per pack. So the first pack of cigarettes I ever bought was at, of all places, a hospital.

I can remember going to the mall as a kid and my dad would have to stop every now and then and smoke a cig by the fountains (indoors). I remember there being smoking in a hospital. Also remember you could smoke in Tiger Stadium in your seat.

Seemed like pretty much every tv show was a detective series back then: (Kojak, Rockford, Charlie’s Angels, Magnum PI, McCloud, Barnaby Jones, Matlock, Mannix, Columbo, Starsky & Hutch, Hart to Hart, McMillan and Wife, etc.); our station wagon had the hi-low beams switch on the floorboard - and the gear shift was on the steering column, also had manual roll down windows, fly-windows and bench seats front and back - and no a/c! I remember folding newspapers for my brother’s paper route (and getting covered with newsprint ink the process) then helping him deliver them by tossing them from the back of that old station wagon if it was raining out (how we didn’t die of carbon monoxide poison inhalation in the process is beyond me??).

Oh yes, mustn’t forget all those lovely 70s fashions, either: all us ladies wearing our hair feathered a la’ Farrah, striped toe socks with huarache sandals - or the dressier look of platform wedge sandals w/ a DVF wrap dress; guys wearing either the ubiquitous stretch terry cloth shirt with bell bottoms - or, like every fancy date I ever had, a faux silk polyester print button down shirt (a la‘ Travola in Saturday Night Fever) and maybe even a wide lapel polyester leisure suit to go with it. They always smelled of Old Spice or Brut cologne, too - unless they were trying to be a little classier - then it was Aramis, Polo or my personal favorite, Azarro Por Homme cologne (STILL love that one - in fact I recently picked some for my husband (no pics??).

Dad bought me a compound bow in 9th grade. Coach wanted to see it so I took it through the school on lunch hour to show him. One guy did freak out and I told him it needs another part to work.

Who remembers this sports drink? My parents always had this in stock as me and my friends would drink this while playing backyard baseball/football and ride bikes all summer long. GOAT

When I worked the to-go counter at the Chimes I always had quarters ready for those filthy smokers I think it was $3/pack back in 2000.

Anyone remember back in the day before security tags that if you wanted to look at a cassette tape or 8-track tape, they were in locked cases covered by plexiglass and there were holes in the plexiglass. You could put your arm through the hole and pick up and turnover the cassette or 8-track to see the songs on it, etc. but you couldn't get it through the hole in the plexiglass. You had to get an employee to come unlock the case for you to buy it.

Hell, they'd probably call out the tac team with their armored car if someone saw a kid riding his bike carrying a Red Rider.

We did that but the worst was pine cone wars. The hard arse green ones will leave a mark for a week or two. One of those old metal garbage can lids as a shield and the war was on.

Also building ramps in the street for us to jump our bikes like evil kenivel.

As a 9th grader, I remember a game-winning drive at the end of a junior varsity football game when our running back had a long run and the defense called a timeout. Coach was talking to us and our running back spoke up and said, “Coach, I need a cigarette!” Coach said, “Kendall, you score us a touchdown here and you can have all the cigarettes you want!” He scored and we won….and he was smoking as we shook hands with the other team.
