…that was totally normal but certainly wouldn’t be considered so now?

For me, it is the memory of my pregnant mom putting an ashtray on her belly, while smoking, so I could see my sister kicking it. I guess another was being gone from home from daylight to dark and my parents having no real idea of exactly where I was all day.

My little brother and I used to run into time saver and buy beer and cigarettes for my dad. We were like 7 & 8.

shooting each other with BB guns.

Hell, they'd probably call out the tac team with their armored car if someone saw a kid riding his bike carrying a Red Rider.

I was a wee lad in the 80s, I just remember movies and going to the theater being a big awesome thing.

Playing baseball in the street with the gang while dodging traffic.

The fact that we middle-class kids called ourselves a gang might be kinda weird now, too.

Cigarette vending machines.
Me and my friends would go to the hotel lobby and by smokes with our quarters. We had to be fast because the owner would run us off.
We had no idea what we were buying. We smoked everything from Virginia Slims to Salems.

Riding in the back of a pickup. My brother and I used to sit in lawn chairs with our backs against the cab. It's amazing one of us didn't end up on the street after a sharp turn.

We did jousting in parking lots with bottle rockets and cars. It was really dumb and really fun.

Mom handing me a ten and telling me to fill up the car and go in and pay.

And you better not go over 10 and have to ask her to find change.
