whatever material hold the rounds in a “belt”.
Any military Baws on here to explain what that material is?
It is steel. The links are fairly light but it all adds up. 100 rd belt weighs 7 pounds. I had this Arnold looking gunner in my platoon back in the M60 days and he would hump the 60 and 1,000 rounds of ammo. This dude was a unit and knew everything a grunt should know but he was the perfect garrison/FTX soldier. His first deployment was OJC and he was worthless by contrast I had another soldier named, appropriately, Weekly. Tiny guy and sorta the joke of the company, it turned out that when the rubber met the road he was 10x the soldier that massive 60 gunner was. Books and covers.

How hard is it to fire from the shoulder?
1 - Depends on who is in your sights.
2 - They are somewhat heavy, but you become accustomed to using it.
3 - The recoil is not as bad as you would think. Most gunners don't do much more than a 3-5 shot burst, unless things get bad, then (see #1) they are not so bad.
Note: Every man in your squad will help lug ammo for your weapon because they know how badly they might need you to have plenty of ammo in a firefight.

3rd qualified expert 60 opinion agreeing with the first two. Not happening in a meaningful way.

Depends on your size and level of fitness. Just about any male who is in reasonable shape can do it. Accurately and sustained rates of fire is another story. Standing fire in most if not all cases is not the best method with an m60. My primary was the M249 and even on a smaller platform it is best in the prone firing position. Have I fired both standing? Yeah, but it isn't the most advantageous way to fire these weapons.

M60s are just not fun to fire at all in rifle version or machine gun.

I was a 60 gunner. It is not hard to fire from the shoulder, but you will not hit shite. The kick back was very minimal because the spring was a mile long, absorbing most of the kick back.
I can tell you this, it was the easiest gun to field strip.
Hold the butt, open the top plate and pull the pin. The butt and spring come right out. Pull back on the handle, remove the bolt. Pull a pin, the trigger comes off. Throw the switch, sling the barrel off.

I was on a competition team, what others have stated is true. Not hard to hold squeezing the rounds off, but the barrel is walking off the target. Enjoyed shooting the weapon, hated lugging it around.

It's not a "precision weapon" like the M4 (from the shoulder), but it can certainly be fired. Alot heavier obviously.

I'm watching a Viet Nam program on AHC, and I see this baw with an M60 firing from the shoulder. Whether he was hitting anything. I know not.
The pig is designed for suppressive fire.

only fired a 20mm, about a half second squeeze and 40 rounds gone, pretty accurate though

In 1992 at SOI in Camp Pendleton I watched a Staff Sgt instructor one evening use trigger control and short belts to fire single shot and consistently hit B-mod targets at ~300m firing offhand. This was the E3 version with the vertical handgrip on the gas tube. The worst thing about the M60 is that the trigger group retaining pin is held by a 3 cent sheet metal clip that tended to fall off on humps.

I'm showing my age, but I carried one and tried several times to shoulder fire it. Not easy. I miss that ole bastard.

Very….I used to teach soldiers how to shoot the M60 when I was a drill sergeant in the 90’s…the most difficult thing would be controlling it. It can be done though but wouldn’t recommend.

There's a 7.62x51 variant of the SAW that SOCOM uses. I wonder how hard that is to fire with the shorter barrel and stock.

You can find videos of people shoulder firing it. Here is a video from Vietnam in 1970. A news crew was with a 1st Cav platoon when it got ambushed by NVA. The M-60 gunner is on his belly, but does get up and begin firing it from the hip (which seemed to be pretty common during Vietnam). Point man was shot in the leg and got his 4th purple heart.

If I’m not mistaken the M60 was almost a direct rip off of the German MG42 as far as function goes. I think they had to slow down the cyclic rate as the MG42 shot like 1200 rounds a minute.

Obtuse1, were you 11-bang bang?

Better known as a SAW. It was heavy to carry around everyday for work in Afghanistan.
