Good! My liberal mother in law loves Bill Cassidy and keeps voting for him . No fricking way she registers as a Republican to vote for him in a primary lol.

This right here is pure BS. Closed primaries keep the other party from highjacking the other. If you want to vote for a party it is simple. Change your affiliation to the one you want for the Primary. If you can't do that then you are simply a complainer who is trying to hijack the system.

This is the opposite of reality. In an open primary if Democrats attempt to eliminate a more conservative Republican by voting for a MAGA Republican or an establishment candidate, they risk their candidate not making the runoff at all.

In fact in 2008 Rush Limbaugh was encouraging his listeners to register Democrat and support Obama for the Democrat primaries. He thought that would allow people to take the nomination from Hillary.

I am a no party.
I am not a demorat or Republican.

I strongly feel I should not pick any party’s candidate during the primaries unless they are no party.

Compared to states with open party primaries, sure.

That statement makes no sense in the context of a jungle primary system like LA currently uses.

They don’t understand this. Every response in this thread is comparing closed primaries to open party primaries, which Louisiana doesn’t have and isn’t even an option on the table.

That effect is exactly how closed party primaries protects incumbents.

Comparatively speaking, no one votes in party primaries. Abysmal turnout only benefits incumbents.

Louisiana has currently an open primary, but is moving towards s hybrid closed party primary system. In this new system, candidates will still need a majority vote in the general election, so a general where no party clears that threshold due to a strong 3rd party will force an additional runoff rather than elect a plurality.

Many here are celebrating the change because they believe it will hurt some moderate incumbent politicians like Bill Cassidy. I caution them because I think it will actually result in worse, less electable republican candidates making the general and losing to democrats. Now, most people might assume that I am saying “moderate” republicans good, conservative republicans bad. This is not what I mean. The state GOP is an incredibly feckless organization. I do not trust them to be better at picking candidates who are electable or effective at governing if elected than I do the general population of the state, who I also do not trust. In my opinion, the jungle primary is a better system for electing candidates that are most representative of the people they serve. I look at the history of Louisiana and how this state was run before the open primaries verses after, and I cannot fathom why someone would want to return to that old system.

Why the frick do you need parties to be involved at all? For a board that decries the "uniparty" and rails at the republican establishment, you sure do want to prop it up.

I'd prefer ranked choice weighted closed primaries, but I'm in Georgia and we don't even have real elections so what does it matter?

Parties shouldn’t have open primaries. That’s one purpose of a party declaration is to have the voters declaring an affiliation with the party to be the only folks with a say. General elections allow the crossover votes.

Actions have consequences, Mr. Cassidy. Your day of reckoning before the Republican Party is coming.

Loser seasons his crawfish post-boil, with target brand “Cajun style seafood seasoning” and follows the directions on the package to a “t”.
