Bill Cassidy's Blood Boils-Closed Primary

Republican Louisiana U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy said he anticipates running for reelection in 2026 during the state's first congressional closed party primary congressional contests, but continued to criticize the new law that he says "makes his blood boil."
Cassidy told reporters Tuesday on a conference call that he isn't ready to make a formal reelection announcement but that he is doing "all of the things" in preparation for another run.
Cassidy won his second term in a 2020 landslide under the state's current open primary system, but was censured by the state Republican Party after his vote to convict former President Trump in his second impeachment trial.

I don’t often agree with Bill Cassidy, but the move to closed primaries is a bad one.

Having a closed party primary before a general election is no different than having a playoff system before a championship game. Let the "conferences" fight it out amongst themselves then they send their winners to fight it out against one another. As a bonus, the unaffiliated get to bypass the playoff system and go directly to the championship game.
He's just nervous he'll lose his seat.

He should be because he is one.

frick Bill Cassidy and the young aide who said she'd "pass my message along to the Senator" this morning.
"Makes his blood boil"...kiss my arse. These clowns think their constituents will forget or overlook how their voting record fails to represent what the people of LA want.
I'm ashamed to say that I voted for this scumbag in his last election, but I refuse to make the same mistake again.

Why would you want Democrats picking the winner of the primary?

Why would you want registered democrats helping decide republican candidates?
No, thanks.

The parties should pay for their own primaries,

Why?
Closed primaries tend to cause candidates to be elected who are less representative of the electorate than do open primaries. In closed primaries, candidates tend to have to cater to the fringes of their party to get the nomination and then pander to the middle to get elected. This forces candidates to flip/flop. Democrats are great at coalescing behind a single candidate before qualifying and showing up to vote for their candidate in the general no matter who it is. Republicans tend to knife fight. In an open primary, the republican with the most broad support (not always the establishment pick and never the most radical one) tends to make the runoff (sometimes even 2 republicans). In a closed primary, you tend to get either the most radical candidate or the best funded establishment candidate. This usually results in a weaker candidate that loses the independents to the democrats and loses the general election.
In addition, this system creates more elections and excludes huge numbers of people from the primaries depressing overall turnout. The closed primary system is designed to disenfranchise voters and allow who the voters get to pick from to be decided by a smaller number of people.
There is no secret that back when this state had closed primaries, we were a one party state. What built the Republican Party was the open primary system. I see no reason to abandon it.
With independents shut out from party primaries, you will get more radical candidates from EACH party in the runoff, and the winner will still be determined by independents. You will just have to hope that the democrats nominate a tranny rainbow kid diddler commie weirdo that the independents despise more than the bible-thumping anti-fun anti-intellectual misogynist racist blowhard the republicans nominate.

If you are not having a closed primary, you are not have a "party primary" - you are inviting all the people who you oppose to mess up what you are trying to do.

Actually, it adds an extra round because Louisiana’s new closed primary setup won’t elect someone who gets less than 50% of the vote in the general. This is good because it prevents a Clinton/Bush/Perot situation. However, the additional runoff is yet another election in a state that already has too many elections. This is a relatively minor quibble, but it is worth noting.
