You young guys can’t imagine Ellick in the 60’s.Only place to get a hamburger on MacArthur,Drive was Burger Chef by Walker GMC,was Walker Oldsmobile then.Reed and Bell drive-in corner Monroe and MacArthur Dr.
1965 MacDonalds opened where Raising Cane is now.Hamburger 15c,fries
15c,Coke 15c..I didn’t like the hamburgers,I got fish sandwich’s,they were 20c. Hoppers Drive In was where the Chicken Salad place is now.
No pizza chains then, somebody opened a pizza place close to where DairyQueen is now when I was 16.Believe they only had 6 tables(maybe 8).Loved that place, pizza was very good and would sell us a pitcher of beer even though we were way under age.
Urena’s on Hwy 1 had good Mexican food, would sell us beer, also. There was Fuzzies drive -in on Lees St.That was about it.

Drag races on MacArthur Dr. between the, lights.Jackson Extension was a gravel road.

Had Don Theater,Paramount and Drive-In on Hwy 1.Going to movies was cheap then.

One thing we had happening that was cool was big dances every holiday my last 2 years of high school. There was a guy at Bolton High that was quite the tycoon, starting when he was a Jr.He would rent City Hall or the Bentley, hire a good band and put on a dance. He had top bands for the time -The Unique’s,John Fred and the Playboys,Basement Wall, had Aeretha Franklin once.
I was told by a friend of his he made about$3-$5000 profit most dances.I know they were always packed at $20 a couple. That was serious money in the 60’s.
That ended when he graduated ,I believe.I wasn’t around,I went off to the Navy when I was 18.

That would be it.
The original poolhouse in the background was the only structure that didn’t get flattened in the tornado we had Jan of 23. They lost 4 homes and the new pool house in that one day.

The old pool house you see wasn’t even missing a screen. Crazy.
