Telephone company laid fiber down the road in front of our hunting cabin.

Say I want to get that service (internet) to the cabin.

Who is responsible for getting that fiber from the road to the cabin? Do they install it completely and recoup that cost over time as I pay for the service? Or do they do it and charge me?

How does that work?

I'm asking here because I never can remember to call those folks while they are open.

Depends on the company and the cost. I have seen that go all kinds of directions.

Might depend on the distance from the road to the cabin.

You'll just have to remember to call when they're open.

Maybe 75 yards.

Really is just that simple.

My internet company ran the fiber from the pole at the road to my house about 100 feet total.

I don’t remember it costing anything.

this will be the difference between fiber to the node and fiber to your house..

For my home, i wanted fiber all the way to the modem..for a hunting camp, i wouldn't care if it wasn't costing me either way

ONT, no modem in fiber.

Based on this, it is hard to believe you are indeed a grammarknotsi.

It's best to know the terminology if you are getting it installed.

OP would benefit from it.

I was joking, but you went full moron..

if my job is to know the terminology to have someone come install it, i'm on the wrong end of the install..

Waiting for Lemmy to come in and tell people that fibre is too much anyway or something similarly stupid

LOL. I prefer fiber to COAX, for reliability, nevermind speed. Back in the day with COAX, it was almost always water intrusion inside the connectors that cause fluctuating issues, which were impossible for most techs to diagnose.

But thank you for the consideration Knotsi. I'm not always disagreeable, just usually.

I remember when we built a commercial building AT&T said it would cost $50,000 to run fiber to the building.

We signed like a 5yr contract so we wouldn't have to pay that 50k

Some of the wiring closets I've been in should have been charged that in multi unit office buildings for CAT5. There was some place on College/Foster that I walked into, (approx 10 stories) and it was a WTF moment. Close to 100 offices, nothing labeled, JFC.

My concern for the OP is that the fiber company will vastly overcharge him for trenching 75 yards, when you could hire a local dude to do it for 10% of the price. It's clearly not the typical 20 yards from the street to the house DMARC as it would be in a subdivision. I know terminating fiber used to be a massive pain in the arse decades ago, but 50m of fiber from Monoprice is only $41. Depending on the provider, you may end up OK, you may end up unnecessarily priced out.

$50k to an office building (assuming not in the middle of nowhere)? F'ing hell.

When you have specifics for the install, yes you should have a handle on terminology. Especially to not look like an idiot to your installer.

Define "laid fiber down the road" is there a pedestal or something on the road?

If I am paying my $ for something, I would do my best to know exactly what I should be getting for my money.

you call and say "does your fiber come to my home or to the box out at the street?"

thats it..thats legit the conversation you need to have with Att/Vexus/Cox, etc..

7/10 times, they will say "we install the fiber all the way to your home modem"

Maybe you, not others. Anyone who is particular about their LAN is going to want to know exactly if a NID, ONT and/or gateway is going to be installed. Where will those be installed and what will it take to get that run the correct location inside the house so preparations can be made.

Seems silly to be willing to spend somewhere around $8k on a service over 10 years and be willing to accept a poor install or poor performance because you just trusted someone whose only goal is to get in and out as fast as possible.

what ?

I know no matter if I'm getting fiber, coax, whatever, that I'm providing my own equipment..

you lost me with the rest of your dribble, you seriously nuked a simple problem..I simply told Vexus where i wanted their installer to put their equipment and it was done..
