What places are nice or decent? I’m sure Montgomery proper isn’t that great obviously. What are some places within 30 minutes that are decent to nice?

Auburn is 45 minutes

Any of the surrounding states

Look at places in Elmore or Autauga Counties. Maybe some of the more rural areas south and east of the city. Although I don’t know much about it, maybe Pike Road?
Avoid Montgomery proper like the plague.

Troy but outside of your 30 minutes.

There are nice rural areas north of town.

Just get across a river.
Prattville is nice, Wetumpka is much improved, Millbrook isn't bad. If you don't mind a drive, there's Auburn or for a less crowded and expensive option, there's places around Lake Jordan like Holtville or east of Montgomery like Pike Road and Tallassee.
The Montgomery ghettos still leak trouble in all directions, but it's much better than living in that pit.

I grew up in Matthews, a small, unincorporated community off of Old Pike Road about 20 min outside of the Montgomery, and if you like country living, its great out there. I absolutely did not appreciate it enough growing up, but would be in heaven there now as an adult.
Marler road is nice and pretty with little subdivisions as well.
It was pretty rural back then, and it seems like development has really crept in to the pike road/old pike road area, but I am sure its still pretty nice.
Wetumpka is nice too with some affordable houses. Same with Prattville and Millbrook.

Prattville. Just moved next to the RTJ course. Really nice neighborhood, pretty much anything I want within 5 minutes.
Lots of new construction going on in the area also, saw a couple existing houses pop up, went under contract fast.

You probably won't get many serious answers here, and prefacing that I live in Birmingham but am in and drive through Montgomery a lot. I could be way off here, but Pike Road seems to be the best area to be in/around. Prattville used to seem that way, but not sure if it still is.

Do you have kids who will attend public school? This is the only question that matters. Answer that, and I can get you some good information

You looking for a place to live around Montgomery?
If so there are a couple of new patio homes going up in Emerald Mountain near the golf course & I think there are a couple of existing for sale
There are one or 2 being built in The Village and some existing homes for sale also check in Stonegate which both are off of Dozier Rd
The 3 above are all near the toll road to put you in East Montgomery
There are plenty of places in Prattville that are all nice
They may even have some historic homes for sale near the downtown area
Have a friend debating on selling his 2nd house in the Deer Trace Qual Run area that would need some tidying up
MIllbrook has a few pockets of the crime element
Wetumpka has some nice places I'd probably stay away from Crenshaw/Gossum area
New construction in the early phases in 2 separate places North & West of Downtown
Little birdie tells me a cotton farmer just sold off a couple hundred acres and the plan is to build homes in Holtville area(Go Away)
Will all of that said I would avoid living in Montgomery unless you plan on living out east in Green Chase Town Lakes Wynlakes or the like
County Downs off Atl Hwy is also another pretty good neighborhood
Just an FYI MPD currently has around 290 cops for a city that should have 490
