Pretty simple. Imagine someone lying to you and about you to your face and not breaking character and seeming to have every expectation that you will accept it. You know that they are lying and they know that you know that they are lying, and they still continue. And they don’t budge.

And when you rationally attempt to walk this person through it, they deny they did what you just heard and saw them do. Imagine the insanity of someone expecting you to actually live in their false reality. And then , to take it a step further, imagine if they took that false reality to your family and friends and everyone in your sphere, and told them it was fact. And then those people “ flying monkeys” then ran with The Big Lie. So that a false reality of who you were preceded you. That’s the malevolence. It’s when gaslighting becomes reputation destruction and the Big Lie prevails while the truth gets crushed.

The lie and the frame job. That’s essentially what gaslighting is and where it leads.

Yes, that right there is gaslighting.

Anyone who thinks that's some fake therapy term is someone who doesn't understand the true meaning.

And people misuse the frick out of the word. Mainly to whine to people for sympathy of people who also don't understand the word, but have been there.

It’s a real thing but recently has been mid-diagnosed. Just the same as a woman always calling a guy a narcissist.

But I’ve known this one a-hole who used to be a business partner of mine and thought he is smarter then everybody and he had an MD. MBA and minor in Psychiatry etc.. and he was a gas-lighting a-hole. Took me a while to realize that he was just about always doing it.

The term "gaslighting" was coined from the 1938 British play called Gas Light, in which a husband manipulates a wife into thinking she is crazy by slyly changing the intensity of the gas lights in their home when she is left alone. He does this in an attempt to make her believe she cannot trust herself or her memory

When used in the right way it can get you out of a sticky situation.

Well I’ve been a victim of it and nearly lost my job over it. And defining it with HR and comparing it to the circumstances I was in certainly got me out of that situating.

It's therapy mumbo jumbo that people overuse.

right bc he was trying to cover up the murder of her aunt
Not exactly. He didn't used the gaslights as much as merely lied about them to cover up activity he didn't want her know about..

He murdered the aunt and married the niece so that he could stay in the house to fine the jewels.

He was searching in the attic for the jewels, and he used the gaslights in the attic to help him search. The attic gaslights used the same gas line as the house gaslights. Accordingly, when he used the attic gaslights it made the house gaslights flicker from lower gas pressure. He told her the flickering gaslights, like the noises in the attic, were just her imagination.

Know the history, maybe watch the original movie. Women are the queens of gaslighting and not taking accountability. They are mostly not made to do so.

Yes you’re really wrong here. It’s manipulation. It’s taking words out of context and twisting it to fit their meaning and agenda to make you even doubt yourself. It’s manipulation. Not some made up concept.

So you don’t believe people manipulate others? Cause that’s what gaslighting is. It’s manipulation.

It’s from an old movie.

I think it means to keep saying something until everyone accepts that something as an obvious fact.

“Gaslighting” is common.

I despise the actual word, but it is a manipulation technique that is used to make you doubt yourself, your memory of what happened, or even your sense of reality.

Gaslighting is super real -

And ironically also the claim of being victim of gaslighting has evolved to be one of the more common ways to actually gaslight someone
