I used to love going to see The Circuit Breakers at the Caterie in the 80's and they were really into this music. Baton Rouge's Slim Harpo in particular. They actually found and fixed up his grave. It's amazing that someone so unrecognized was covered by The Who and The Stones and others.

Slim Harpo - I Got Love if you Want It

The Who - I'm the Face (if you want it)

Slim Harpo - I'm a King Bee

The Rolling Stones - I'm a King Bee

I'm a King Bee has also been covered by The Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, John Belushi, The Doors, Lou Rawls, etc, and is in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

We need a Blues thread

This thread is for pre-rock, mostly acoustic music. Electric, post-rock blues is both out of place here, and deserving of its own thread.

I realize there will be some overlap between a Blues thread and an old timey thread which includes blues, but if you can live with it so can I.

We also need a LA Music Thread. Dedicated to Dixieland, New Orleans R&B/Soul, Cajun/Zydeco and Swamp Pop.

Somebody tried to start one, but unfortunately he didn't specifically say in the thread title or OP what the thread was dedicated to. So naturally within the first few posts some clod posted MegaThud b/c they're from Assfrick, LA and the thread was ruined

And since you're wondering: I'm not starting one b/c I've been warned about having too many threads on a board at one time

Ah, nice to see Annette Hanshaw listed here. I have several of her 78s, mostly on the Diva and Velvet Tone labels. She recorded a ton of sides. Three of my favorites:

"Big City Blues" (1929)
"I Get the Blues When it Rains" (1929)
"You're the One I Care For" (1930)

A young Benny Goodman does the clarinet solo in the last one, as I recall.

I always liked Rosa Henderson's version of "Struttin' Blues" from 1923, on Victor.

Leona Williams also did a very winsome version of it at the same time, but on Columbia.

Always had a personal preference for 'vaudeville blues' over the later 'blues' fare, unlike most folks.

The first recording of the traditional Cajun song "Colinda"

Happy, Doc, & The Boys - "Allons Danse Colinda' (1947)

Rod Bernard of Opelousas ("This Should Go On Forever") had a minor pop hot w/it in 1962.

I was inspired to post after seeing a clip of Doug Kershaw on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1971, where he describes "Colinda" as "a song I wrote when I was 9"

The first recorded version of the folk standard:

Grayson & Whitter - "Tom Dooley" (1929)

These lyrics are rather more sordid than the cleaned up Kingston Trio hit

Grayson here was nephew of the Grayson mentioned in the lyrics, who caught the real Tom Dula/Dooley

Tom Dula of Wilkes County, North Carolina (1844-1868)
