Obviously can’t take anything from the first preseason game lineups as it’s all about experiments and conditioning.

But we will do it anyway.

To me a couple things seem relatively clear:

Melli and JJ need to be the first subs and one should be on the court the majority of the game after the first subs. Lonzo and Jrue shot great but adding that extra 3 threat looked like it made a big difference last night.

2nd unit ball handling...I think they will need to stagger Lonzo and Jrue so one is on the court most of the time in a lot of big games. I’m not sure I believe in Frank Jackson. Hopefully NAW can develop into that role.

I think it might be smart to have Redick come in early for BI and then being BI back later with the 2nds for a few minutes. He can create his own shot and that might be really useful versus backups and with the 2nd unit.

I think NAW will be handling point with the second unit as he continues to grow. He also provides a ton of spacing with his shooting range. I want to see him and redick on the court with Zion or Hayes terrorizing the paint.

I wish Williams was a better shooter because I like him guarding the wing better than Hart.

Hard to say at this point, we played so many players last night.

Favors, JJ, Hart, FRANK didn't look great but will be in rotation off bench.

Inserting NAW at the right time could get us points, not sure if it should be with the second team or when Gentry sees the right times. He will score.

I do think one of our advantages this year should be constant pace, wear down the other team b/c we are a team with a bunch of B players but very deep.

Where’s Moore?

Maybe I’m alone in this thinking. But I think BI would be better off the bench with 4 other guys who have a harder time creating their own shots. The ball seems to stick on him just a tad, and it seemed even more noticeable when he was on the court with Zo, Zion and Jrue who were moving the ball extremely well

I want NAW playing this year, and taking his lumps if he has to in the NBA, not the G-League.

We have enough ball handlers to run the offense through that i'm not worried about a backup PG being a rookie. Frank has never and will never be a PG, and they are doing him a disservice by trying to make him one.

Lonzo and Jrue can handle the vast majority of the PG minutes, with some help from NAW. And as you pointed out, BI can create whenever he wants, so having him in there with NAW is a safety net.

starting lineup is a given:
Lonzo
Jrue
Ingram
Zion
Favors

Moore/Melli/Reddick are all next in line to play significant minutes, with Hart/NAW/Okafor playing spot minutes as well.

We need another backup big, and i've been saying this since the offseason. Preferably one that can shoot.
I don't know if Jaxson is going to be ready to contribute much this year.
If there was a way to get Olynyk or Leonard from Miami for Miller and whatever else needed, which would get Miami under the tax, that would be very helpful. They are almost $4M over the tax. We can take back $5M in extra salary in a trade.

I thought he was the future, but now I think that NAW is the now.

Early season rotations will probably make a lot of people pull their hair out. Gentry will likely go with guys who have experience in his system early on. He’s going to want those reliable guys who can play the way he wants them to play especially on defense. I expect to see a lot of Moore, Williams, and probably Frank in the second unit. It’s going to be some ugly offense.

I know most of the fans on here will show patience because we are die-hards, but I Hope the average fan understands how a basketball team grows.

I think BI needs to initiate on the second unit. Replace him with JJ or Melli in the starting lineup depending on the opponent.

Whatever the solution is, the Pelicans will have plenty of options to go to. They just need to figure out what works best through trial and error.

I think BI needs starters mins but I agree him running the 2nd unit would be ideal. I like the idea of him being the 1st sub and being brought back late 1st/early 2nd to dominate other team’s 2nd unit.

Williams and Jackson can probably safely be cut at this point. Better players (more suited to this roster) will be available after the teams make their final roster cuts in a few weeks,.

Jackson has a gtd contract, he won’t be “cut”.
Kenrich is partially gtd just like okafor

the roster is set with 13 guaranteed contracts and 2 partials, plus the two 2-ways. Nobody else is making the team. If there is a change in the roster it will be via trade

And that's very unlikely until December 15th, when we could trade Darius Miller and his $7 million contract.

In the meantime, get used to the guys we've got, because none of them are going anywhere for the next two months.

On top of that the players most people have as most expendable like Moore, Jackson, and Williams are players that have experience in the system and reportedly are leaders in the locker room. They won't be moved until a good deal comes along and won't drop on the depth chart until some of the better players earn the trust of the coaches.

BI played some point last year when Zo went down, and his game took off. He seemingly needs to ball hog a bit to fulfill his potential and 6th man/2nd unit would be ideal, like Harden in OKC.

But would he accept that role past this year, just like Harden sought "starter" label roles and a-la-carte ball-hogging elsewhere?

I wish he could just hurry-up & blossom into a version of KD with GSW. Doesn't require bringing up the ball, but still gets his touches/mins/points/starter-cred. Then it'd be a no-brainer come contract time and team-fit.
