So, which invasion tactic would you rather be a part of?

The last wave of the beach landing.

Incredible what those guys did.

Imagine today’s generation…they’d huddle up and cry if one of the Germans called them a name.

I’ve seen a lot of bad takes on this website but this is by far the worst

It depends upon which beach I was to land on.

1st wave vs 1st wave.... then Airborne

1st wave landing on the beaches was near 50% Casualty at Omaha Beach

Later in the day, then beach landing....

82nd and 101st were dropped all over the area. even the glider troops had issues

quote:

D-Day casualties for the airborne divisions were calculated in August 1944 as 1,240 for the 101st Airborne Division and 1,259 for the 82nd Airborne. Of those, the 101st suffered 182 killed, 557 wounded, and 501 missing. For the 82nd, the total was 156 killed, 347 wounded, and 756 missing.

Some of the beach landings were relatively low casualty. See Utah Beach. The bad spots in Omaha were horrendous though.

True, but that was the case with paratroopers too.

In the end it was all about where you landed. Luck of the draw.

D Day casualties were mostly concentrated on Omaha Beach.

The casualty numbers are kind of surprisingly low, except for Omaha.

Depends on the wave and beach sector, but probably the Infantry. Airborne had it rough all around between the panic drops into marshy areas, the flak, the too low for the parachute to open drops, the out of control plywood gliders, the chaos of finding fellow paratroopers in the dark, being lightly armed. Recipe for chaos there. The chaos was strategic though because the Germans had little clue WTF was happening and where.

My grandpa was 29th Infantry. Got called out of replacement depot after the landing before taking St. Lo from what I can tell. 3 bullets and 10 months later his war was over.

I guess that increased my odds why I'm typing this post today.

Still better odds then being in a B-17. Their life expectancy was not very good. Was about a 50/50% chance of living through it, or being KIA,MIA, or POW.

I wonder what the numbers are regarding first waves versus 2nd, 3rd etc

I would not want to be in the first wave storming the beach

Airborne all the way. The odds of your plane blowing up mid-air are way more palatable than being mowed down before you even get out of your craft, let alone while you struggle towards the beach.

Let me die on the ground fighting rather than drown in the surf or after taking two steps off the boat.

Agreed. I just didn’t want to call them Marines per the thread title.
