What is everyone playing? I am a ProV1 fan after switching from the ProV1x a couple of years ago. I usually place a couple of orders a year when Titleist runs their 3+1 offer. Last year, they did not offer it and I just bit the bullet and ordered them anyway. This year, with the new versions of balls dropping, there are currently 3+1 offers on Callaway, Bridgestone, Srixon and TaylorMade. So, I decided to try something different to save a little $$$ for some upcoming golf trips I have planned.

In your opinion, what ball is closest to the specs and feel of a ProV1. I have researched and have an idea but would like opinions from others who may have gone thru this process.

Replies are greatly appreciated.

In general, the cover is what we pay up for.

Urethane is the best performing material.

Price point for urethane cover is $40 a dozen minimum.

Lower compression and lower price options are available:
1. Taylor Made Tour Response
2. Srixon Q Star Tour

I like the TM tour response. The only negative is the ball with the stripe can be hard to see on the ground.

For you, I would guess Srixon Z Star tour or TM TP5 would be golf balls to try

Bridgestone and Srixon are good options, I’m not a tp5 player, for some reason I swear they aren’t as long as the proV

I do like the tour response….it’s a really good ball in that second tier price point.

My go to for tournament or money games is ProV

At the end of the day, there's still a large gap between ProV1/x and everyone else, imo. The 2021 TP5/x balls were awful (relative to $$ and expectations) but the newly released ones are supposed to have taken a big step in the right direction. I haven't hit them yet so I won't judge the new version, but the 2019 (?) model was a great ball. I'm not sure why they changed off of those.

To me, the closest thing to the ProV1/x is the Srixon Zstar balls. They were not as long off the tee, but also not terribly shorter, either. Irons, wedges, around the green, and feel were all right up there though.

Look at the distance numbers. The TP5 was averaging almost 20 yards shorter than the ProV1x. I was using it for a while because I liked the feel around the green but I was thinking I was losing distance but figured it was maybe just me, but then someone posted this link. Finished the dozen I had left and never bought them again. Supposedly Rory is playing the 2019ish version of it, not the current.

I switched to the Z Star diamond. Even liked the Maxfli Tour X as far as a little cheaper option goes. Have a dozen of the Mizunos that I haven't tried yet.

They offered it last year from 3/14 - 3/27. I’m expecting them to offer it again this year around the same time and plan to buy 4 dozen

Have you looked at Vice Pro. I am not nearly good enough to tell the difference between any balls but I have read that Vice Pro (3pc urethane cover) closely acts like the PV1 especially when it comes to spin and greenside workability.

I was a Titleist staff guy as a pro. The Pro V series is the best ball I’ve ever played. These days, I’ve switched to the Bridgestone Tour B X and really like its performance.

I just switched from the ProV1x to the new 2024 Taylormade TP5x.

It is definitely longer than previous TP models.

I’ll second the Maxfli Tour X. That’s a really solid ball for something cheaper. I play ProV 1X when I’m playing on weekends, and Maxfli Tour X when just messing around or playing a quick 9

The TM Tour Response is also one of the lowest spin balls out there. On the same spin level as the Titleist AVX.

Supposedly, Wilson is amping up their deals.

They have a broad offering of golf balls.

Wilson Triad and staff are urethane.

I really like the Vice Pro plus. Similar performance characteristics to a Prov1x

What difference are yall noticing vs Kirkland and some of those other ball types

I hit prov1x in little tourneys and such. But Kirkland gets interchanged regularly with most drop off being off the tee box

My GolfSpy ranks the Kirkland ball low because of excessive spin.
