Some of the sports stuff is definitely dramatized (which I get). For example, they actually kicked the shite out of their opponent in the championship game. But I get why a movie would make that change. I don’t believe Sunshine ever did schoolyard yoga.

And when Petey passed away a few years ago, he maintained that he didn’t have a fumbling problem.

Love that movie. One of my favorite in the sports category.

One big thing is Alexandria has been an urban city since the 1700s. They made it seem like it was in a very rural part of the state.

And not to derail the thread but TC Williams was renamed a few years ago

The other schools were integrated too. The movie made it seem like they were playing all white teams.

The banana scene did not happen.

Bill Yoast had 4 kids and not 1. Yoast was not happy that the movie portrayed him having 1 daughter.

No one through a brick through Coach Boone's window. It was a toilet instead.

The Titans did not dance during warmups but I liked this inclusion in the film.

I loved the movie when it first came out due to its message but after doing research on the historical events the film portrays, I can't help but feel robbed by Hollywood.

For one...Virginia had been integrated since the mid-60s and most of the players who went on to form that 1971 T.C. Williams Titans football team had already played on integrated teams before the area schools merged into one. There may have been some racial tensions among them, but most of the tension involved competition for starting spots. Also...the real Coach Boone was absolutely DESPISED by his players and was nothing like the Boone we saw portrayed by Denzel Washington. The man was a brutal task master and there was even a mutiny among the assistant coaches, led by none other than Coach Yost, several years after the 1971 championship season due to his cruelty toward players.

And as has already been stated, Petey never had a fumbling problem, Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell were not best friends, and Bertier didn't have his car accident until after the season had concluded. Also...Yost's daughter was not the die hard football fan she was portrayed in the film.

In summary, the story about the 1971 T.C. Williams football team was heavily embellished. Almost none of it was true. It really makes you feel like you'd been had when you actually read up on what the real team was like.

modern day Hollywood and The Message has actually caused me to enjoy older movies that address race issues less. i always loved Remember the Titans, but now when I watch movies from this and previous eras, even though they work racial subplots into them in a fairly believable and not super obnoxious style, my 2024 warped brain is so easily triggered by this stuff that I just get aggravated. i guess partially because i see it now as like the early stages of what i now know Hollywood would become. i dont know, whatever.

that said, in a vacuum, Remember the Titans is a great fricking movie.

well ya'll just ruined this damn movie for me!!

For me the movie isn’t ruined. Was it embellished like all Hollywood films? Certainly. But the message is the same and it’s a damn good movie (Rudy is the same way in my view).

If it was the exact same film but completely made up teams and names they’d both be great films and stories. Like a lot of other sports movies from the 80s-2000s.

Never knew this was even based on a true story. Just thought it was a solid movie.

Oh well, it can’t be as false as Rudy was. According to Joe Montana he was just a normal walk on player that nobody gave a shite about and the whole movie was a laughable lie.
