NBC is trying to pull off a late-game steal against Warner Bros. Discovery.

As the NBA negotiates its next media-rights deal, NBC is preparing a $2.5 billion package annually to air games in an attempt to squeeze out Turner Sports, a longtime partner of the league. The news was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The NBA’s media-rights negotiations are ongoing with Amazon and longtime partner Disney/ESPN is also in the mix.

It seems a little odd that Turner is singled out here rather than just being listed as part of the negotiations. I'm guessing this is a leak by the league to tell TNT to up its offer.

It’s because a deal has already been reportedly reached with Amazon and ESPN. The NBA is likely to only have 1 more partner so that’s going to be a bidding war between NBC and TNT.

The only way as a fan Im ok with NBC taking over is if the whole TNT crew switches to NBC as well like Chuck, EJ and Kenny. The ESPN/ABC broadcasts are god awful.

TNT doesn't have to do this. They can match any offer NBC puts out and the NBA contractually has to go with it.

Again unless they’re hiring all the TNT guys- I’m pretty sure they won’t be as good. Their football broadcasts are pretty crap as well.

I’d imagine if TNT gets left out, Amazon will try to hire their broadcast crew.

I would imagine there is some contractual stuff preventing those guys from just going to the competition.

That is basically TNTs differentiator and it is clearly the best in professional sports.

They also may have clauses that their contracts that they can be opt out if Turner loses NBA rights. Of course that may have one been unimaginable so who knows if their agents had the thought.

TNT wouldn’t even be covering the NBA anymore though. What would they pay those guys to do?

They would no longer be TNT employees so I imagine they'd be free to do a they please.

NBC wouldn't have the same production as they do SNF or ND Football. Why do you keep comparing networks?

Fox Sports announced in December 2018 that it had acquired the rights to "Roundball Rock", which it now plays for CBB on FOX.[13] CBB on FS1 had used their old theme (a "marching band" variant of the NFL on FOX theme), the same one as CFB on FOX/FS1, but switched to this theme for the 2019-20 college basketball season.

John Tesh owns Roundball Rock and has already said if NBC wants it back for NBA games, that can happen.

If NBC Sports wins the rights, it’s free to once again license “Roundball Rock” from Tesh, who owns the song, the composer said in an e-mail.

Fox’s deal for “Roundball Rock” doesn’t preclude any media company from using the song for NBA games, Tesh said.
