I thought what I initially had was an ear infection because the pain and pressure is mostly in that area. But after a couple of days it became hard to chew food and looking up the symptoms it appears that this is what I actually have. I'll try to go to a doctor soon but from what I read it seems that it's really just something you have to let heal on its own because the only other real treatment is surgery if it doesn't.

In the meantime I'm just on a steady diet of soft food and ibuprofen. I've found a couple of hacks where if I tilt my head all the way forward then I can chew pretty normally without much discomfort. And when I'm in the show the heat makes it pretty much all the pain and pressure go away but as soon as I step out it flares right back up. If only I could stay in the shower 24/7

Sleeping however has been the biggest problem because no matter what position I sleep in and even taking my wife's extra strength prescription Ibuprofen instead of the OTC brand it flares up the worst when I'm trying to sleep. If anyone that's dealt with this has any tips on how they dealt with it would be a big help.

That’s a lot to read, so TMJ is “too much jizz”?

Years ago i kept getting headaches and couldn't figure out why, always on the same side. Went to different doctors, specialist, no one really seemed to care to figure it out.
Went to a NP at a walk in clinic b/c i had poison ivy beyond topical ointment treatment and when talking to him he was asking about other issues so i figured i'd mention my ongoing headaches. He immediately thought to check out my jaw near my ear where the joint is and applied some pressure at certain points while i opened my mouth and made my jaw pop. Almost punched him when it popped it hurt so much.
He said you have TMJ and you should go to this dentist on Sherwood and he'll make you a mouthpiece to get this fixed.
Sure enough go to that dentist, get the mouthpiece made and probably took only a few weeks of wearing it before all the pain went away and i haven't had issues with that TMJ issue in years now.

the reason i had it was from clinching my teeth at night while i sleep.

Thanks for the advice. My next dentist checkup is next month so if it's still giving me problems I'll mention it to him. I never thought I had teeth clenching problems while sleeping but maybe I do it without knowing and it would explain why it flares up the worst when I sleep. I might just buy that mouth guard the other guy in the thread mentioned on the way home just to see if it helps in the meantime.

That and I'll have to sadly cut down on the bjs it sounds like

That ligament in the animation, the one with the pad. I split that ligament, had to have surgery. It's just a patch job that removed the frayed part of the ligament.

I could only open my mouth about 1/2" until they cleaned it up in there. It worked for a while but I think I'm having issues again. Earache, Headache and Tinnitus/muffled ear.

My wife had the surgery years ago. Problem is, unless your health insurance has a specific rider covering it, it's on you. Most dental plans won't cover it because it's not a part of the mouth (per them). So it's part of your health coverage (or not). We had to pay. $20K. Then usually they put you in braces for a couple of years afterwards to correct your bite. That's another $5-6K or so. Then a retainer to wear to bed every night.

Bright side...it worked. Headaches and pain gone. But most health insurance doesn't cover it or at least it didn't 12 years ago.

Also, the reason it hurts the worst when you are sleeping is because you are grinding your teeth at night. This is usually what causes it in the first place.

If you buy an over the counter mouthguard that you form to your teeth by dropping it in hot water, you will find out soon if you are clenching or grinding. I grind and clinch through them in not time. I don't know I'm doing it in my sleep, but apparently I am. I had the dentist finally make me some stronger guards. I ended up cracking some teeth from the clinching and grinding. Not something to play around with.

Does it hurt on one side or both? Any popping in your jaw when you open? Any difficulty opening or reduced opening? Has it ever happened before?

Could be grinding your teeth at night. Go see a dentist and, if so, they can make you a hard/soft night guard.

Yep, orthodontist made me a custom mouth piece to make my jaw line up correctly for about a year and it made a huge difference. Mine started after a bad car wreck.

It's only on my right side. I don't have any issues opening, yawning for example is no issue. It just hurts when I bite down. Don't know how to really explain the feeling, but it feels like there's an object in my inner ear that my ear constricts around when I bite down all the way. Like I said though, if I tilt my head forward to where my chin is basically touching my chest, then it doesn't feel as bad and I can chew somewhat normally. And no, I'm in my mid 30s and never had this be an issue before.

I get the same earache feeling from my TMJ. It's on my right side, so sleeping on that ear and jaw triggers it. If I always sleep on my left side it never acts up.
