Tell me your Cicada stories...

Today at my desk, all the way back in a secured area, I felt something all of a sudden crawling on my face. Immediately brushed it to the floor to see it's little beady red eyes. fricking commie bugs invading us.

Got swarmed leaving my office in Murfreesboro yesterday evening. I can hear them all day inside over the sound of a compressor and music.

I used to gather them (the shells) up by the hundreds as a kid and have set piece battles, creating trenches and terrain and having them Duke it out.

Nah, Cicada's are cool. They sound like spring/summer to me. Also... there seem to be frogs or toads in my backyard now. Several or one or two really loud ones. Maybe chasing the Cicada's to eat them?

Up here in NEOhio...i've only ever experienced a few here, a few there. Kind of loud but no big deal. Collect the shells off of the trees when we find them with the kids...
Then one early summer we took the kids to go visit family in Florida...
About 10-20 miles from the Ohio river, i started hitting cicadas off of my windshield. A lot. Pulled into the next rest area and the sound from the cicadas was deafening.
Mu son and I walked up to a small tree. there were thousands on just this one tree. covering all of the leaves, all over the trunk ect.. a pile of shells that looked like thick mulch around the bottom of the small tree,.
Every tree in that rest stop was covered in the same way.
Get back in the van, cross the river, 10-20 more miles for lunch.
Stopped in a small torn in WV, and the noise was still there...Had to yell to hear what anybody was saying.
Next stop was across the mountains into Virginia and they were left behind...
Have never experienced that before and came away very impressed...

I haven’t even heard one yet in my area….I was wondering just yesterday where they were. The ground in my area must not be warm enough yet.

There’s been very little activity here in central MS. I can hear them deep in the woods, but only a handful of bugs and shells. Last brood eruption here, maybe 10 years ago, they were everywhere. My shite-Tzu puppy would try and eat them and they would get stuck in her facial hair. It’s lots of fun extracting a cicada from a dog’s face.

A while back I was working on a project at Whitfield the state hospital in Mississippi. They have drug rehab, nursing home, etc. on campus but they are known for the crazies. There’s a lot of people there that actually have to wear a helmet because they collect rocks and fall over or hit each other with said rocks. The helmets they wear resemble old leather football helmets and watching a group of those leather heads scream at trees because the cicadas are driving them even crazier is both sad and hilarious.

Remember in 1980 in Natchitoches riding by an empty Northwestern parking lot at night with the huge sodium lights. Thinking, what are the big piles gathered near the light poles? Get closer...wiggling, writhing 4 foot deep piles of bugs.

During the last one of those brood coming out parties one flew into my house on e Boyd as I opened the back door. It kept knocking itself back and forth between my stove and cabinets until it rendered itself unconscious. They’re really fricking dumb

Going down the road and thought I had a water pump or something going out. Had radio off and talking with my son so it was quiet. After stopping twice, finally realized it was cicadas.

So many here in north central Alabama and loud as can be. My Husky/GSD mix eats the heck out of them when they are emerging and when they are trying to fly. Once they turn hard he leaves them alone.
I’ve had one on my neck in my car, on my shirt in the house, and occasionally buzzing me while walking the neighborhood. It’s been nearly 12-14 days of the noise and hope it eases off soon.

I was living in Virginia when the 17 year ones came. They were everywhere. You couldn't walk anywhere without stepping on them in some places. The sound they made was resounding, kind of like mosquitos in the marsh but 10x louder.
17 years later, after almost two decades of heavy real estate development, there were very few. I'd see one on the ground here and there, but not often and I couldn't hear them at all.
