A group of people got tired of paying the most amount of taxes and not getting any return for it. So they got together and petitioned, put it on a ballot, passed the measure, and went through the court and won. Is this not "Democracy" the left so often talks about? Writing articles about it in National Publications shows the left is scared shitless of this.

Dumb people keep electing dumber mayors and the smart people decide to leave. Guess which of those groups has the money.

Baton Rouge will become Mogadishu soon.

The People of St. George are exercising rights recognized by international law.

quote:

Article 1 (2)

The right to self-determination is enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. Article 1 (2) of the Charter establishes that one of the main purposes of the United Nations is to develop friendly international relations based on respect for the “principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples”. The principle of self-determination is prominently embodied in Article I of the Charter of the United Nations. It states that all peoples have the right freely to determine, without external interference, their political status and to pursue their economic, social and cultural development.

Except no one "left" Baton Rouge here. They already lived in unincorporated EBR Parish. The only difference is now that same area has incorporated as a city.

St. George is a salute to seeing the reality of what has happened to Baton Rouge and choosing to not want that reality. Maybe call it a good example of situational awareness.

The City of Baton Rouge should have annexed this area long ago. They didn’t because they’d have to provide police and fire protection. Also, the voters in St. George could vote in City elections.

But, they did get the St. George tax $$ under the combined ‘city-parish’ government.

Take the St. George $$, but not give anything, not allow a vote.

It was a disaster waiting to happen. And it did, to Broome. But it’s the best possible outcome for St. George.

Now, BTR has to look see who is left for it to collect revenue from. Whose left? The poor and industry. BTR has some hard choices - that need to be made.

Overall, a healthy outcome for really all in this area.

Largely, I don't care. I'm still in an unincorporated area and as yet have seen no impact pro nor con (and doubt I will).

If I had to make a stand beyond "meh" it would be "good for them". This all started with people being dissatisfied with the direction the EBR public school system was going and how the government in BR was turning deaf ears to their issues. Their options were to just give up and accept failing schools or incorporate into their own entity to create their own school district and administrative system, they chose the latter.

With that, the fault that this has happened lies completely with the unresponsive bureaucracy operating in Baton Rouge. Blaming people for trying to fix an issue instead of those who caused the issue is as ridiculous an endeavor as it is useless.

Rich BR Elites lost and continue to stir up racism. It is amazing that Lipsey, Bernhard, Manships etc all fought this - billionaires - whose kids and grand kids never set foot in a public school, but accused the STG movement as rich white people.

Billionaires who rule over the BR plantation.

Too many Baton Rougians have been dupe - useful idiots.

Love it. Buckhead tried to break away from Atlanta, but failed on the 1st try. City of Atlanta lost it's mind over it. I'm guessing well over 50% of the revenue to support the lunatics lifestyles and operations comes from Buckhead.

If Baton Rouge was smart, when they floated consolidation they should have covered the entire parish, like Orleans.

That way the issue could have never come up, now it is too late to put the genie back in the bottle, and it may be time to dissolve the office of Mayor-President and have two separate offices and councils.

While consolidated government can work in some areas, but jn some places, it is just a vehicle to rob the tax base of the unincorporated areas to fund the floundering city government. Then you have elected officials who do not live in the Urban service district make decisions on the city. Or in Baton Rouge’s case you could have a Mayor President who didn’t even live in the city they represent because they live in an unincorporated part of the parish.

It appears that they have been deprived of their liberty for an extended period for the benefit of those living elsewhere. This very reason is why our government was established in the manner it was so many years ago.

The true culprits, it seems, are our media and culture. This is evident considering that, aside from Presidential elections, there is a general lack of awareness about local political events and issues.

Discussions about the 2020 election being "stolen" are widespread, yet it's ironic that the smaller, yet significant elections are just as unbalanced and often go unnoticed. In reality, Democrats are gaining an advantage in these local elections, either by moving from town to town or through incentives, subsequently achieving higher participation rates than their conservative counterparts in many instances.

The firm opposition to St. George almost resembles a state of shock, as conservatives have managed to accomplish something at the local level despite the resistance.

More power to the actual inhabitants of the land also escaping the tyrannical rule of the city they were not even a part of officially.

I applaud the tenacity and determination and wish them a bright future (it’s La. so it’s limited by the dullness of the state though).

Right or wrong, it's self determination and secession. It's ultimately what this country was founded on.

Support.

If it halts the outmigration to surrounding parishes, the parish benefits.

Definitely a positive for the residents of the new city.
