Not a surprise. In China there is real cellphone competition. Oppo(Oneplus), Xiaomi, Huawei, and others make phones that are frankly far ahead of Apple in terms of technology and capabilities. Thanks to our carriers, we don't have them here, but in China, different story.

The WSJ reported:

quote:

Apple said Thursday that global sales in the January-March quarter fell 4.3% compared with the same period a year earlier. A big reason was China: Sales in what Apple calls “greater China,” including mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, dropped by 8% to $16.4 billion.

Counterpoint Research, a market-research firm, said iPhone unit sales in China fell nearly 20% in the quarter. The iPhone lost its No. 1 spot among smartphone brands in the country, falling to third behind the local rivals Vivo and Honor....

Consumers in China cited the absence of major advancements in hardware and performance as a reason to refrain from getting a new iPhone. Some are switching to Huawei, which has put out advanced phones despite U.S. sanctions, while others are keeping their old iPhones longer.

Tracy Xu, a 41-year-old Shanghai-based human-resources manager, said she found Huawei’s camera, battery life and phone reception superior to the iPhone’s.

Apple executives said they remained confident in the China business. Chief Executive Tim Cook said on a conference call that some iPhones were the top-selling smartphones in urban China, and he said a recent trip to the country had left him optimistic for the long haul....

Deng said recent iPhone releases didn’t offer much excitement and seemed to bring minimal hardware improvements. He said he was still an iPhone fan, but “Android devices do offer more competitive features nowadays.”

Apple, which usually shuns discount sales, ran a multiday promotion in China in January, cutting the price of iPhones by the equivalent of up to $70. The promotion came ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, a traditional gift-giving season....

It found that in China’s premium smartphone market, increasing competition from local brands has caused the iPhone 15 series to underperform overall, although the iPhone 15 Pro Max continues to dominate the topmost segment.

The leading Chinese brands including Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei and Honor have recently introduced smartphones that use AI for purposes such as translating languages and creating and editing images....

Under Counterpoint’s definition, more than 10 phone makers have introduced more than 30 smartphones with generative AI capabilities, which have become familiar through such programs as ChatGPT. None of those models comes from Apple—yet....

This is also why apple has recently started to adopt android features that have been around for years.

Yup. Blackberry rolled out the swipes/gestures in 2013. Problem was it was so far ahead that people weren't ready for it. Apple copied it a few years later.

Once the blue/green bubble problem is solved, 50% of US iPhone users will swap to Android. Since other countries use WhatsApp or whatever for texts, they don’t have this issue.

Not sure that would make any difference here. What are they doing that Google and Samsung aren't?

I think the origin was Swype and it first appeared on a windows phone.

Read notifications and typing indicators, I’m running away from this iPhone soon as that is worked out. Only got it so I know my kid and wife sees my messages. But I’m getting aggravated with this platform it’s super boring and lacks features. Face lock and messaging are its only advantages and I can live without face lock being better.

It's as much a shot at Apple for starting to move its production facilities to India etc. The Chinese announced that official govt phones had to be Chinese only a few months back.

Hardware is better than Pixel for starters. Use quick charge. Pixel stuck at 30w and takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours to fully charge. Their modems are much better as well.

Samsung is swinging at the market as well. However, These are all really big companies and can compete with Samsung all day long. There also aren't carriers acting as gatekeepers.

I just don't think any of this is why Apple is retaining/adding US customers. Until Android does something substantial that Apple can't match, the culture they've created isn't going to be overcome IMO.

i love my 1plus8t. i know its long in the tooth now, but its still fast and getting every android update. my phone is like an appliance these days; i don't necessarily need it to be glamours, just need it to charge quickly, last a long time and open apps without significant delays.

i didn't know oppo owned 1plus; is that an american company? same people who made the legendary progressive scan dvd players back in the day?

and yes, this ancient (gotta be what..8 years old now?) 1plus 8t has fantastic 5G capabilities and my daughter is still on an iphone 6 and my wife on an Xr and their data is sloooooow on TMOBILE.

i bought them both 14s so we'll see if that makes a signficant change. my daughter (23) is probably going to cry..she's been making do with that trashed iphone 6 FOREVER.

tl;dr apple phones have lagged behind at least with the modems and features that android phones seem to get to the market much faster but it would be easier to break into fort knox than get my wife or daugther to give up their iphoens

You switched on me. You were asking about how different androids compared to each other. Not to apple.

I asked what the Chinese manufacturers you mentioned were doing compared to Google/Samsung because they're already in the US market. I thought your point was that their absence was the reason for Apple's strength in the US.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been a OnePlus user for a while now and I'm on currently on the 8T as well. It's a solid phone with good hardware. Samsung and Apple phones are either nerfed via software or they suffer from hardware degradation over time. My OnePlus seems to keep chugging along after almost four years and still feels as fast as it was at launch.

Unfortunately my biggest gripe is OPPO buying OnePlus and taking over the OS development. The OS isn't as robust as it once was. They're also an ethically questionable company. Last year, many people (myself included) saw their 8T's randomly update despite having "automatic updates" turned off. We didn't even get a warning! We were all forced into OPPO developed software with no way of going back.

After my 8T bites the dust, I'm moving away from OnePlus and likely buying a "Nothing" phone.

Interesting. That's something to keep in mind. My biggest complaint is Google took away free video storage about the same time all phones started having 4k cameras so we're forced into some type of cloud pay plan.

Thanks allot google for making me so dependent on google photos. I dread the day I have to take everything down and move to a different solution.

agreed. It's buttery smooth. Only minor complaint I've had is the lack of wireless charging but given how slow that is I probably wouldn't use it much anyway.

Didn't realize it was only 4 years old! I'm not such a dinosaur after all!
