Steeples has potential to be really good in recruiting but I'd feel more comfortable if they hired 1 more elite recruiter somewhere on staff to go with Frank the Tank.

You can never have too many great recruiters and I think they will target one for WR coach. That said, Polian is an elite recruiter and Cooks has a strong track record in that regard as well. There is a reason Wilson, Polian and Cooks were the first guys Kelly brought in.

Yeah, and let Steeples learn to be an even better recruiter from the goat, Frank Wilson - Steeples will arrive at LSU with a bachelors degree in recruiting and leave with a PhD, haha…

I have decided to treat LSU football like AA. When you goto AA they tell you forget everything you think you know and just trust the program. Kelly has proven himself everywhere he has coached so I am just going to trust the program.

Seems like a hire with lots of potential.

I think that it must be Kelly's M.O. to hire some very young, talented coaches with great potential to execute exactly what he wants done on the field........... Kelly seems to have a great deal of confidence in his ability to communicate the plan and teach his assistants on how to execute. I like what I see.

Steeples helped develop 2021 cornerback Jakailin Johnson into one of the nation’s best players. After picking off seven passes as a junior, Johnson is now ranked as a consensus Top 100 recruit. The 30-year old Steeples was also the head coach for Notre Dame 2020 signee Jordan Johnson, one of the top wide receivers in the nation.

I am loving seeing how a real coach builds a staff. This guy has a lot of promise and it’s a low risk hire that could pay huge dividends.

Not sure why, but I read this as he should be a good recruiter.

I’m neither happy nor upset with Cooks or Steeples. It’s an incomplete grade at this point.

So why the frick are you asking this?

So…now that the DB coach hires look to be complete, are we happy with Cooks and Steeples over Corey Raymond?

Are we paying close to $1 mil/year for him? I think Corey wanted to be the best-paid or close to it, not third at best among non-coordinators.

Steeples made the jump from coaching high school to the NFL last year after transforming De Smet Jesuit High School in Creve Coeur, Missouri, into a powerhouse in just four years. Under his guidance, De Smet’s football team went from 2-8 in his first season in 2016 to a state championship in 2019.

I smell a St Louis/KC recruiting specialization...

Corey Raymond was making around $575,000 at LSU. I think a reasonable raise gets him to stay.

Kelly obviously didn't want to give him a reasonable raise to stay.

I'm not sure why Raymond is some sacred cow around here. He's been a good recruiter and a good coach and he'll always be a Tiger, but he's not irreplaceable.

Florida gave him $850k and a title. Cooks is getting $500k and no title. There wasn’t enough money and titles to go around.

I don’t care what level you are coaching at- that level of improvement is legit. Time will tell if Steeples is the right fit here, but you have to be an effective coach and leader to get that kind of improvement in the span of one class of HS players. He definitely has a lot of potential.

Agreed, and let’s not get it twisted, our secondary has straight up suck balls the last couple years.

Not putting all of that on Corey, but he’s likewise not completely immune from responsibility for our deficiencies back there either.

More than any of that, the Stingley/Ricks situation bothered me a good bit. Again, 100% of the blame doesn’t fall on Cory‘s shoulders. But we always hear recruits claiming how much they love to play for Corey, and yet, that dynamic duo of Stingley and Ricks never amounted to $hit. Things got tough, and Stingley & ricks didn’t give a damn about playing for Corey
