Finally moving some place with a yard. Could not be more excited. Please guide me in purchasing a grill/smoker/whatever. Honestly have no expectations or budget so will listen to anything. Of course I don't want to light money on fire but am willing to listen to budget or more higher end items. Propane/Charcooal/etc... just want to get something to cook on. The house unfortunately has an electric stove so I imagine I will use this a lot.

This isn't going to be the damn Ferrari of grills/smokers, but it's extremely versatile and gets the job done until you move on to bigger and better.

Oklahoma Joe Combo Smoker / Gas Grill

I've had one for almost three years and it's still in great shape... on cover #2 but that's all I have had to replace. The side burner works great to get the charcoal chimney started as well.

Give us more details on what you plan to use it for mostly.

- Do you just want more of an outdoor kitchen type of thing since you don't want to use the electric stove?
- Are you really into smoking, or you just want that option? Or does it matter. I only ask because smoking is a whole different ball game, depending on what you want.

I'd say get a nice Blackstone griddle based on your post. Get a separate smoker if you really want to get into it.

That oklahoma joe option looks pretty good if you really want a combo grill / smoker.

TheGoodOne

I have had this one for probably 6-7 years. It has its pros and cons…. But it’s a hell of a smoker and grill combo. Especially if you have a “space” issue with storage. No propane though. It’s basically an offset style smoker, but it works more like a gravity fed. You can keep temps at 250 for 5-7hrs depending on the lump you use. You smoke in the box on top and can cook in the grill in the smoke box.

There are tons of options out there…. This worked for me at that particular time. I e been using it since. I purchased through the The Good One’s site. I think they’ve expanded a good bit since I got mine.

Do some research…. Tons of info out there.

Hard to go wrong with an Egg/ceramic cooker as an all in one versatile solution

Charcoal imparts a better "grill flavor" IMO. I am a fan of the Weber Performer charcoal grill due to its convenience, cooking area, multitude of accessories, build quality, and versatility (grill or smoker). There are a lot of quality choices available, though, including the PK New Original and others.

EDIT: Like bluebarracuda said, ceramic cookers/kamados (and variants) like the Big Green Egg have huge followings. While they are not my cup of tea, many folks cook terrific food on them.

Start with a Weber charcoal grill. Not a huge investment and pretty fool proof to use. Not much better than lighting the fire and sitting down with a cold beer while it gets going and listening to some good music. Once you get the grilling down on it, then you can learn to smoke on it.

Go to Lowes and get a 4 burner weber. Charcoal is good and I cook on it but if you want to cook outside, you're also going to want convenience. A high quality gas grill gives you that.

You can also purchase smoke tubes like the amazen smoker that work really well at providing smoke in a gas grill but you'll probably need two of them. Low and slow is easy on a gas grill.

If you're only getting one. Get gas and make it high quality.

Weber 22" Kettle is what I used to start grilling as well as smoking. Big enough to offset smoke a ~14lb brisket, versatile enough to grill whatever you want over charcoal. Can purchase different accessories like a griddle insert, rotisserie, pizza oven, etc.

Do you want a combo or separate grill and smoker?

All comes out the same price wise mostly.

If you are trying to keep costs low you get a Weber Kettle and add a Weber Smokey Mountain if you want a dedicated smoker as well. Even the smaller size WSMs can cook a good bit surprisingly

I got my OK Joe Bronco smoker at the beginning of Covid and have enjoyed it. Easy to use and lower price. It can grill as well but not the best as a grill.

If you want an all in one grill smoker combo a egg ceramic cooker is the way to go. It is a better grill than smoker. If you want a smoker only and you are on a budget go with a Weber Smokey Mt 22 inch. If you think you will really enjoy smoking meats especially ribs, butts and brisket go ahead and spend the money get a backwoods G2 chubby or a Lang patio model.

A month or so ago I purchased a Camp Chef 36" woodwind with the sidekick attachment after reading some reviews here. It was $1,500 or so all in.

I previously had a gas grill and a horizontal smoker. I wanted to be able to grill quickly if I just wanted a burger or something, but also was tired of tending the fire on my smoker every 30 minutes. I was worried about the cook times on the pellet smokers or heat up time. In hindsight, that wasn't a valid concern. It gets to cooking temps in 10 min or so.

I honestly wouldn't change a thing about this grill. Steaks are SUPER simple to get the nice rare to medium rare you want. Comes with meat probes. Cook to 100, then sear on the cast iron cook top. Chicken comes out juicier and more tender than I could ever get on the grill. Smoking meats, I can throw meat on the smoker and go to work all day and come home to a brisket ready to eat. And don't get me started on burnt ends. Everything has been delicious that I have cooked on this thing and it is 95% the grill. I couldn't find another grill other than Pit Boss that had a pellet smoker/gas grill top option. $1,500 is probably a bit on the higher end of the budget pellet smokers, but it was money well spent to me.

I have several types in my outdoor kitchen. I have a Napoleon built in gas grill....good quality, typical gas grill performance, least used. BGE...great flavor, holds temp pretty good, awesome if you like lump coal cooking. Traeger.....easiest/laziest cooking, has WiFi and can be operated by my phone, drawback is if you like heavy smoke flavor pellets do not do it, think of a convection oven powered by pellets. Blackstone griddle.....by far the most used piece of the bunch, enjoy the hell out of coming up with different recipes.

A few years ago, I was looking to replace my smoker. Had it for years and was wanting to upgrade to a heavy and big smoker. Budget was in the $5,000 range. Lots of options and research to do! While I was considering my options, I knew I needed something to grill and smoke on until I pulled the trigger. I spent right at $200 for a Weber Kettle. Well, it does all I need to do. I bought a few accessories, read a lot and never did buy the $5,000 smoker.

I can do most anything I want on the Weber. Obviously not as much volume, but for my family, all we need.

Do your research. Find some of the YouTube video's on Weber Kettles, I think you will be pleased.

Good luck!

Lots of great options suggested. I’ll say this, if you decide to go with a charcoal, stick burner or pellet grill for all the obvious reasons, but still want the convenience of a gas grill for quick cooks, you might look at the Weber Q to add to whatever you pick.

They are small, portable and reasonably priced. And they cook like a charm. No flare ups, even heating and fun to cook on.

I have a BGE, RecTec and all kinds of other devices but I love grilling on that thing... So well designed.

I have a Weber kettle grill and a vertical pellet smoker. Sometimes I want to lounge around the smoker and cook or want flames to red meat, so I use the Weber. Sometimes I have stuff to do it need to cook larger amounts, so I use the pellet smoker. I can't imagine not having both.

I’ve got a Weber Kettle, the only downside is space when smoking, but it’s only an issue if you invite a bunch of people over. Would love to have a stick burner offset, I just don’t want to spend the money on a quality one since the vast majority of my cooks is for a family of four.
