Katherine Hepburn in The African Queen

Annihilation did a good job with this and they tied the female thing into the plot seemlessly

Lots of movies did it well until that became the point of the movies, then they started to suck.
Same thing for TV series. Exception being The Expanse, they did it well with almost every female character in the show.

She’s great, was great in Sicario as well.
I like Emily Blunt, as well. As long as we're showing her some love, I'll nominate her character in "The English", although it was a series, not a movie.
ETA: She also did a good job w/ her strong female roles in "Quiet" and "Quiet 2."

Such a fun movie. Watched that all the time back in high school/college. Haven’t seen it in years.

The best Sarah parts are those that show she's well rounded.
There's the scene where she's describing her dreams to the doctor and sobbing.
The scenes where she tries to kill the scientist and loses her nerve.
She's a woman made hard by hard circumstances but there's still a real person, a real woman underneath that comes out sometimes.
Modern "strong women" roles are essential cartoon characters. They aren't written to be interesting or realistic or relatable, they are written solely to push some warped social agenda.

Nah man Linda Hamilton was a badass in that.
Gone with the Wind was a great answer.
Kill Bill 1 and 2 would probably be my top choice. It's outrageous, but it's meant to be. Every female in there pulled off the badass female. Uma, Vivica A Fox, Daryl Hannah, Lucy Liu, and that girl who played Gogu.
