I see GNR, Metallica and such on kids TShirts nowadays, and it got me thinking of modern music and how unimpressive it is overall. When you see bands from years past being worn by kids, you know that music had some lasting impact that defines an era.

Besides Taylor Swift I don't really see any modern bands that have that creativity and infectiousness to last through generations. Will we see the next generation wearing Imagine Dragons in 20 years? Are there any bands that are groundbreaking and influential right now the way previous generations were?

It’s difficult to imagine any modern acts making the cut, as most have especially bad album cover art and don’t have cool logos.

Twenty one Pilots

1975

They will probably still be wearing
Joy Division shirts and not even realizing it’s a band

So what if it is? Lotta good music in there. There’s some mediocrity there to be sure, but a lot of creative and interesting things being made within that group of artists.

K-pop is dominating pop music right now by getting back to what made pop successful: great hooks and danceable music. “Butter” by BTS is crazy catchy. Taylor Swift writes tons of catchy hooks as well, and is renowned for her live performances. She sells out arenas for a reason. Silk Sonic is the best neo-soul band in decades. Anderson Paak and Bruno Mars are at the top of their game.

Olivia Rodrigo is probably the most interesting pop star out there right now. She’s a metalhead at heart and incorporates a lot of elements of alternative rock into her music. She’s going to be so many kids’ gateway into heavy music and alternative culture, much how Evanescence and Avril Lavigne were in the 2000’s. Billy Eilish is having a similar impact, but I don’t find her music as catchy.

Ronnie Radke from Falling in Reverse and Ollie Sykes of Bring me the Horizon are probably the two biggest “rock stars” in music right now. They’re incredibly charismatic front-men leading massively successful bands that are visible in the mainstream in a way that most rock just isn’t right now.

Sleep Token and Greta Van Fleet are two of the few rock bands that have really managed to get mainstream attention, albeit in completely different ways. GVF appealed to Boomers and gen-xers by giving them a taste of the old days. Sleep Token is the obsession of young tiktoking zoomers, giving them vibes that appeal to this weird obsession with Deftones that every alt girl under 22 seems to have.

Spirit Box, Polyphia, and Periphery are probably the three biggest names in metal right now for good reason. Spirit Box’s vocals are insane. Polyphia is playing some of the most technically brilliant music ever composed. Periphery is some of the heaviest proggiest metal in existence, and yet incredibly engaging and listenable.

These artists will be remembered even if you never hear them on your classic rock fm station.

If we’re talking the biggest frontmen/women in rock it ain’t them. Oli is definitely growing but Ronnie has way too much baggage and honestly not many know him outside of the rock scene.

If we’re talking the biggest current names in rock it’s Dave Grohl, Billie Joe Armstrong, Hayley Williams, and maybe Hozier (Dude has been gaining insane popularity with the college girls lately)
