My idea to start the rebuild of the Saints.

Here’s my best idea how to get the Saints back on the road to rebuilding in 2024. It’s not happening in a year or even 2 years (until Carr is gone) but here goes.
1. Bring Peat back on a 2 year incentive laden deal to play LT and push Penning to be something besides a 315 lb paperweight.
2. Trade 14 and 149 plus our 2nd or 3rd next year to the Rams for 19 and 52.
3. Take WR Brian Thomas Jr at 19 (no not just b/c LSU, he’s going to be a star). At 45 take T’Vondre Sweat because he would immediately fix your run defense problem and fill the double team role that Onyemata left which lets guys like Breese, Granderson and Jordan to be freed up 1 on 1. At 52 I would love to have an OL fall, especially the OL from Duke Graham Barton, but i’m going with LB Edgerrin Cooper from Covington. Demario isn’t getting any younger and Werner is a good player but Cooper is a freak athlete with real football speed much like Demario Davis does. He would take over for him in time as leader of the defense. The LB from NC State, Payton Wilson, would also be a great guy to combo with Werner if Cooper is off the board.
4. I’m challenging one of Penning and Saldiveri to take the starting LG job this year now that they are both healthy while still having James Hurst as a serviceable fallback option. If it fails then next year you’re drafting OL first but we have invested heavily in OL lately and we need to give those two guys all the chance to succeed as possible before you move on. I would look more to getting Carr a big bodied target that still has speed and would be a perfect 1-2 with Olave with Shaheed being your speed guy and then you look to fixing your defense up the middle making it younger, cheaper and more athletic.
This all changes if Alt were to fall to 14 as he’s the only sure thing LT I can see besides JC Latham but most see him at RT because of his size. We have so many needs that we really would be best served taking the best plater available because chances are we need help in that area.
Let me know what y’all think. Upvote, downvote, it’s all good. I know most would draft OL first in this draft but right now is the time to finally trade back and pick up another pick in the top 100. I think Brian Thomas could very well end up being the best WR in this class in time. Nabers is more polished and will be great but I love the character of Thomas to go with his measurable traits. He would be basically the quiet storm Colston 2.0 that just came to work and did his job like a pro.

I doubt much of that happens, but this one I feel good about:

Holy crap that's giving up a lot just to pick up a mid 2nd rounder. Hell, you can almost get 52 just for trading down 5 spots in the 1st & 149. But you want to add 2 future picks?
FYI, you don't work on a multi-year rebuild by turning 4 draft picks into 2. That's what you do when you are a playoff team that is a few moves away from being a legit title threat.

FA market will not allow this to happen

the problem is Carr is still your QB and Allen is still your head coach
Hopefully Kubiak can fix the offense and we know the defense will be good enough since that's Allen's forte but his biggest challenge is fixing the locker room.
Stay at 14 and OT has to be the pick.

I’d love Saldiveri to take that LG spot. He was in high demand last year, lots of teams were trying to trade up for him so there’s obviously something there with him, he was just hurt 90% of the year.

I want Jayden Daniels. I would sell out this draft and trade Lattimore to get him but that’s not happening. A lot of people have different opinions of JJ McCarthy but I actually like the kid’s game. He processes defense very fast and he is smart between the ears while still being athletic. I think he goes to Denver at 12 because Sean sees Drew in him but I wouldn’t be pissed if we took him at 14 either. Michael Pratt is another intriguing guy that you could get on day 3.

- Let it burn to the ground while resolving dead money and bad cap hits.
- Hire a competent head coach and staff.
- Hit on several draft picks.

BT would be a huge addition, but OT is a need and we could get a good one at 14.

My idea to start the rebuild of the Saints
How to Start:
1) Pour Gasoline Everywhere
2) Light match
3) Enjoy the sh'tshow while paying off debt and pushing draft picks
4) Have NBA Champ Pelicans make random appearances so people attend losing games (its what the Saints did)
How to Begin:
1) In 2026-27 Begin the rebuild
2) Hire new Coach
3) Draft New Players

Not sure you can do both of these
Because we have to keep kicking the can to get under the cap, I think it will take at least 5 years to get to a clean slate.
Team is still $9M over the cap per spotrac and will probably need another $10M for free agency & draft picks. They are already $60M over the 2025 cap (probably in the 40s once new cap number set) and that doesn't include the impact of clearing the next $20M, this year's free agents and draft picks being added to that.

There will be some cap savings when they cut MT I would think.

Thomas won’t get past the jags in my opinion. Brian Thomas that is in this scenario picking at 19. They are going to let Ridley roll.

I see Thomas having Justin Jefferson like hands and ability to separate and high point the ball. He’s not as crisp in his routes as Jefferson or strong as Chase but he’s tall, fast and has great hands. it’s his character that puts him over the top for me. He’s just a great kid in general, not a big trash talker but lets his play talk for him just like Colston did. If he can add 10 lbs of muscle to that 6’4” frame you have a kid that is 6’4” 215 and can jump out the building.

Extending Carr pretty much sunk this.

You need to do some research on the trade value of draft picks, this is ridiculous. And why would you want to start a multi-year rebuild with less cost-controlled premium draft picks.

6-2? Nobody lists 74 7/8 inches as 6-2

Yeah I just completed a successful 1 year rebuild. Traded Carr, Kamara, HB, MT, and Maye for extra picks. Restructured Ram, Lattimore, Jordan, and Davis to get under cap. Drafted JD, Odunze, Brian Thomas, and Cooper Dejean. Moved Coop to strong safety and Adebo to FS. Outside corner is Latt and Taylor. Defense needs some work but is above average. Offense is unstoppable. Needs a little work on the oline though. It can be done.
