Old school Russian thing… they are making it clear what happens to someone who fricks with them.
Back during the Soviet days, some of their ambassadors got kidnapped. Their response was to kill all the kidnappers in a gruesome way.
A Google search claims it was a Lebanese group tied to Hezbollah who captured four diplomats and killed one of them. International media claims the kidnappers received parcels containing decapitated heads of the kidnappers’ family members in order to secure their release.

In the 70s, when hijacking airliners was all the rage, everyone left Aeroflot alone. Why? They knew the Soviets would just blow the whole thing up on the tarmac - passengers, crew, hijackers. There was nothing to be gained from it.
