An image showing a National Guardsman sporting what appears to be a Nazi symbol on his Kevlar helmet has caused the Army to launch an investigation after it was spotted on social media. The 20th Special Forces Group’s official Instagram page posted a photo of three soldiers on Sunday, in which one of them seems to have a patch depicting the Nazi SS Totenkopfverbände — more commonly known as “Totenkopf” or “Death’s Head” — over a palm tree,

So, they took the original Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK) patch…

Replaced the swastika with the SS Totenkopfverbände version of the old Prussian Totenkopf….

Prussian version…

SS version…

To make this patch that he put on his helmet…

Is this guy a Nazi? Possibly. But who knows? He could’ve just a young, dumb soldier, who like most young dumb soldiers has no idea about Nazi symbolism from 80 years ago and simply thought the patch looked cool. Either way, it’s caused a stink.

In this day in age, wearing a swastika brings along with it certain connotations. And I'm not even saying he should or shouldn't. But if you choose to do it, then expect backlash.

Nevermind, I misread. I took it as he was wearing the first image shown, not the skull one. Although my point still sort of stands.

If a skull and crossbones makes someone a Nazi they might as well just call me Goering.

What a ridiculous thing. The nazis were around for, what, a decade? And now they get all the cool symbols in perpetuity?

It's not a swastika though, it's a skull and a palm tree.

Yeah, I misread it. I clarified that in my post.

If you’ll reread my OP, you’ll see that his patch omitted the swastika and instead had the SS version of the Totenkopf. Virtually everyone knows swastikas are bad. But you have to either be a Nazi or a WWII buff to know the Nazis also used a bastardized version of the Totenkopf skull & crossbones as well.

I don't care what the patch is, it's unauthorized. Soldiers are wearing uniforms, not LARPers throwing corny patches on their shite like they're tacticool.

Tier 1 guys aren't part of the conventional Army. I doubt that NG unit is a Tier 1 unit.

Let's not act like the specific design that the SS used is some generic skull and cross bones design that is displayed commonly.

Who said that? I'm pretty sure you can get the non-SS version of a skull and crossbones and anything you want and the most anyone will call you is a fig.

A palm tree with a skull?

Bruh really?

It is so sad had hard administrative level folks will be reaching and scared the first second some “may possibly” be offensive.

My question is, what nerd noticed this on a weekend warrior's helmet and pitched a fit?

I'm thinking it was OP.

No it doesn't. Totenkopf imagery dates back to the 18th Century and Frederick the Great, at least.

Pussies who are offended by NOT swastikas can frick right off.
