Good point.

He should just tell them it's a "Slava Azov Battalion!" symbol and every media talking head would wash his feet.

If you really wanna see a major melt .... let a soldier get caught with a Confederate flag anywhere near their person these days.

I seem to remember that the DAK fought against us and actually killed Americans and a shitload of Brits.

In this day in age, wearing a swastika brings along with it certain connotations. And I'm not even saying he should or shouldn't. But if you choose to do it, then expect backlash.

Nevermind, I misread. I took it as he was wearing the first image shown, not the skull one. Although my point still sort of stands.
Your point stands.

He took two separate Nazi images and combined them.

He didn't take just any skull and crossbones. He took a Nazi image of skull and crossbones.

He didn't take any just image of a palm tree. He took a Nazi image of a palm tree.

It seems improbable that he would not know the source of the images considering that both images are specifically Nazi images.

I'm not saying he's a Nazi, and I'm not saying he supports any Nazi ideology.

I am saying that he knew what he was doing when he combined two specifically Nazi images.

I'm reasonably familiar with WW2 history in general and had no idea of the hidden symbolism inherent in the patch. My FIL was a combat photographer in the European theater.

My inclination is to initially think the best of people, not the worst. The simple solution is for his CO to ask how he came to use that particular example. Otherwise, any conclusion regarding same is pure speculation.

As a former Marine, never under estimate the dumb shite a young man can inadvertently do, with no thought of malignant intent.

The palm tree isnt even the same. The nazi palm tree has seven branches, his patch has like 4 1/2 branches.

Ill give you the skull.

Its tasteless and I wonder where he got the patch from? Somebody is about to get their arse whooped.

So, palm tree (not a Nazi symbol) + skull (not a Nazi symbol) = Nazi symbol?

The particular skull used is a nazi symbol. It was designed for, and worn by the SS.

I really love the War in North Africa. It doesn't get enough emphasis.

I mean, we're splitting hairs here. The Nazis "adopted" Norse/Nordic runes. Are we suggesting that all such runes were, are and will forever be Nazi symbols? Despite dating to pre-history?

I get the Swastika (which is also an appropriated image) - I'm not arguing that point, but there are folks in this thread arguing about "Nazi" palm trees and "Nazi" skull and bones.

This dates to AT LEAST 1815:

Being offended by NOT swastikas is soft, IMHO.

(ETA: I suppose we should talk about the Nazi Jews in the rock band KISS and the whole SS lightning bolt thing, then ...)

No it doesn't. Totenkopf imagery dates back to the 18th Century and Frederick the Great, at least.

Sure it does. I'm not arguing with you on whether or not it "is a Nazi symbol." I agree with you that it's not. I also agree with you that people looking to get offended by stuff suck. My only point is if you're gonna choose to wear/show/display something that is close enough to something like Nazis, be prepared for the pushback. That's all. And yes I understand that most of the time the person choosing to display it in the first place likely isn't worried about pushback.

Hugo Boss suits?
Mercedes-Benz and VW cars?

Lines of sanity need to be drawn and enforced everywhere.
"Death's Head" would likely be too strong for a sports team. But for a special operations outfit? GD right I want those guys thinking of themselves as harbingers of doom, reapers, pirates, killers. Any extra edge, so long as it is contained and controlled.

I highly doubt this guy custom made this patch himself. If I had to guess, he probably came across it either online or somewhere like a flea market and bought it.

Is it possible he recognized the symbolism? I suppose. But considering the level of history ignorance that’s prevalent today, particularly among young, military age people, I’d say odds are good he bought this patch simply because he thought it looked cool.

My question is, what nerd noticed this on a weekend warrior's helmet and pitched a fit?

I'm thinking it was OP.

You think I saw this picture, contacted the New York Post, and convinced them to write a story about it?

That makes sense to you somehow?

If I were so offended by Nazi symbols, I would not ensure my models are historically accurate.

Was he planning on invading Poland? Nah...Probably not.

I doubt this is an organized threat in the making.

Exactly. Most likely people looking to be offended. There is social currency in either being a victim or offended nowadays.
