Good. The current debate format is a total disaster

Correct. Trump will debate the moderators in addition to Biden, while Joe is fed one softball after another with no follow-up questions.

No way Biden debates.

But you're fooling yourself if they don't craft a narrative about "not giving Trump a platform to threaten democracy" as their reason.

Watching Trump Loyalists complain about someone not debating him is solid entertainment.

Honestly, I never watch debates. Because I can't even recall the last time one was an actual debate.

While I think Biden is a pussy for ducking it, that's sort of my emotional response. My logical response is that debates in today's day are utterly worthless or...................worse, tend to end up producing one or two gotcha soundbites that are completely meaningless in terms of policy yet sway a subset of the moronic public.

The whole system will be a mockery and we may as well be in a banana republic.

So if someone refuses to debate it invalidates the system?

I guess we need to pick someone other than Trump for the Republican nomination, then.

Not bad, but they'll never do this b/c they won't have scripted answers.

I don't really agree.

But, some of you seem to have forgotten what debates have devolved into. Unbiased moderators are long gone. Impartial fair debates are long gone.

Nevertheless, Biden will debate if he feels like he needs to. And in the future, I think that will continue to be the case. Trump is going to blast Biden for not debating. And, hypothetically, if 2028 is Desantis and Newsome, Desantis would bury Newsome with "he's scared to debate again" if he didn't debate.

But, if you want debates to be the standard, you have to be willing to uphold the standards of the debate stage. When you abuse it and use it as a way to prop a specific party's candidate, you've lost its value.

That was how the Nixon Kennedy debates were held.

Just a TV studio, a moderator, and a panelist of journalists.

But some of those early debate formats were geared for a more long form presentation. Eight minute opening statements, three minute answers, etc.

Nowadays if you can’t get your message out in under 2 minutes your point is lost in the noise. Not to mention, they would have to pump Joe with the good stuff again to get him last that long on stage. Trump on the other hand could wipe the floor with that format. Also, it would be impossible to agree on a panel of journalists without biases.

I remember one 2020 debate which Biden literally beat the pants off of Trump. Trump spent the whole debate focused on himself, and then tried to blame his loss on COVID.

Not sure why this is downvoted. Biden crushed Trump in the debate.
