Will the tattoo fad fade out?

1) Is the current rise in tattoos just a trend or here to stay?
2) What is driving the tattoo fad?
Seems like in the past tattoos were just working class, bikers, and military. Now it is very common amongst middle class people (rich still don't seem to be partaking).
I am far to indecisive to get a tattoo.

I’m the same, too indecisive. I would have buyer’s remorse if I got a tattoo lol.
I feel like you see way more women these days with tattoos than guys. I’ve always said, when they are 80 years old, that ain’t gonna look good.

Are today’s arm sleeves tatts yesterdays barbed wire around the bicep tatt?

In high inflation times they can be a good investment. I got one in 2008 for $125, that same one now is over $450.

It really took off in the mid 90s.
That’s the first time I remember a “normal” person getting one that wasn’t a military person or a musician.
I never knew a single person with a tattoo growing up.

For women they lose their appeal when she gets fat and she's over 30 generally. Then it just looks gross. Probably harsh to say that but it's just something I've noticed.
There's a lot of dirty arse looking people in the world.

The amount of kids in high school that have tattoos now is insane

It's cultural primitivism. Literally. We are just mirroring primitive cultures that brand themselves and put holes in their noses and eye lids. It happens when a culture rejects its identity and seeks it elsewhere. In our case somewhere in the mid 90's that began to grow in funky white enclaves and spread from there throughout the middle class. Previous to that it had been strictly a subculture membership thing-the military, bikers etc.

Tats are part of the destruction of the middle class and it morphing into the poors.

Now it is very common amongst middle class people (rich still don't seem to be partaking).
Alternatively put, people who now can afford to have good taste do not always avail themselves of that opportunity.

It will always be popular for people with lack of impulse control and who can't think that far into the future.

This is an excellent essay by the estimable "Theodore Dalyrymple":
quote:
I was recently consulted in the prison in which I work by an
inmate who was the proud father of two children. I asked him
whether he still saw them: continued contact with their
biological offspring being something of a rarity among the
imprisoned paternal community. Instead of answering me
directly, he rolled up his sleeves and pointed to two tattoos
on his forearm, red hearts with scrolls across them bearing
the names of his children—two tattoos among many others,
needless to say. He hadn’t seen either of his children for
years, and had never contributed anything to their upkeep.
Indeed, the idea that he should have done so was so completely
alien to him and to the mores of the world in which he moved
that the thought had never crossed his mind, even fleetingly.
By contrast, he obviously believed that his tattoos were a
sign of genuine devotion to his children. Their names were
engraved, if not on his heart exactly, at least on hearts
painfully engraved on his skin, and one could easily imagine a
touching deathbed scene in which he would be reunited at last
with his children and would there show them the tattoos as
proof that he had never really forgotten or abandoned them.
They would probably accept this as having been true, and
therefore forgive him his dereliction of duty.

There’s nothing more disgusting than a really good looking lady with that crap all over their arms and legs.

I don’t care sleeves or all that crap but getting a discreet one that means something to you is good by me.

Tattoos are a way for people to be ‘creative’ without actually having to ever actually do or achieve anything in a competitive environment. The more we allow people to work from home and not respect their companies, the more society will become trashy.
Both children and adults need supervision and we’re a better society with such. Somehow, we’ve allowed today’s 20-35 year olds the ability to feel like they can call the shots and that they have a right to dictate things without any accountability.
The American middle age and youths need a hard lesson in tough love and that your actions may have reactions you don’t like. I’m glad I’ll be retiring in a handful of years.

I got an arm sleeve last year. It's only supposed to last up to 5 years and eventually fades off.
