I was accused of plagiarizing on an essay at LSU back in 03 or 04. Professor sent me an email about it and I had to go plead my case with the dean of students or something. They gave me an incomplete since it was a final project. Once I got before the dean, I cited my sources and resources I used to make my point, they waived punishment and the dean of that program graded my essay instead of the professor because apparently she accused several students of it because we had just a couple sentences similar she found online. My opening paragraph was close to something she found on Google, and one of my viewpoints was very similar since it was dealing with the same subject. But I cited everything properly and didn't even see the source she used until after getting the email.

Well you also have to be the correct race/gender since we judge people by those immutable traits now.

I remember one guy got caught looking at a cheat sheet in a programming class for engineering. I watched the professor catch him and ask him to leave. He ended up graduating with us, so not sure exactly what happened.

Also had to do community service on campus for being caught with alcohol in the stadium once. Two girls that had to do it with me were there for getting caught sneaking out of a play or something which they needed to attend for credit in one of their classes. Apparently, that was considered cheating and the disciplinary board gave them community service and probation just like they did for me.

When I was a freshman at LSU in 1991 some guy that worked in a printing office was selling Math 1021 final exams for $150. I was pissed because i had already dropped the class. I later found out the guy was caught, and they had to throw out the 1021 Final exams and go with whatever your grade was pre final exam. The guy selling exams was kicked out of school.

Yep! Same thing. I think mine was 1992 though.

I had similar experience. Got thrown out of football game for throwing ice onto the field (I actually dindu it). They tossed about 4-5 of us and took our student id's. We had to see the Dean on Monday morning who ordered us to take an alcohol safety course of some kind and a few hours volunteer work. Retarded.

You may be right. Could have been Spring of 1992 or Fall of 1992.

My dad always tells this story from when he was at LSU in the early 80s. I assume it happened, but I can't confirm that he wasn't making it up.

He said he watched some guy sitting at a desk with his book open filling out the test sheet. A proctor just watched him the entire time. He finishes and walks up casually to turn in the exam. My dad says the exchange went like this:

Proctor: You don't think I am going to accept that test, do you?
Student: Do you know who I am?
Proctor: No, and I don't care who you are
Student: Good

He then puts his test in the middle of the stack, flips all the papers into the air, then runs out of the classroom. I would assume he got away with it as long as nobody snitched.

majority of time it just impacts your grade in that course
if severe enough I guess it could lead to more
noted above, most of the time it goes to the dean of students

they have that software that reviews papers now and kicks it out once you submit it online in moodle as well to prevent plagiarism

My father in law tells the same story from the same time frame. Either they were in the same class, or it’s an urban legend/joke that made the rounds around then

I was in a history class where the professor would give you a list of ten essay questions ahead of the test. On the test day, he walked in and posted the question, then turned his back to the class. Everyone (it seemed) except me pulled out ten blue booklets, picked the pre-written essay for that question, then sat back for the appropriate amount of time before turning the booklet in.

You’re very wrong - here’s a story about a pretty famous camera from 1963 that gives you the idea about their size-

LINK

Hardly a “large black and white monstrous device”.

And that’s also not to say that the hidden camera wasn’t a still camera, that simply took a photograph.

Regardless, the argument over exactly what type of camera it was doesn’t matter. I’ve heard the story before. It involved an LSU student athlete who was otherwise not notable, who had access to the information through a relative, as well as another who was politically connected. They got caught and kicked out of school.

That story has made its rounds for years. It’s an urban legend, though it may have its roots in a movie.

A friend of mine playing ball at Baylor. Got caught passing off plagiarized papers. He was the 1994 ncaa rebound leader. Whole thing screwed up his life pretty bad. Many years later he was murdered by his wife's ex.

It's a shame. He was a really good guy with a big heart

I was in athletics so we would send a kid not enrolled in that class to sit for the final being given the day before to the MWF class or the TT class.

They would pass out finals and once people started handing them in, he’d just put it in his bag and slip out.

Worked to perfection for a few years.

I was caught cheating on a 7th grade vocabulary test by Sister Clarita at St Catherine. For those who might remember her, this was in 1974ish and she was the Nun who had had polio and had a very swollen left leg.

I was sitting on the workbook that had the vocabulary list. I’d spread my legs to glance at it. She came and stood by me as the time ran out and told everyone to turn in their papers. I pretended to be thinking until she tapped me on the shoulder and told me to put my paper on the desk.

I figured I might have been caught but decided to brazen it out and maybe she wouldn’t notice the book on the chair. So I got up and headed to the front, when the whole class busted out laughing. I had sweated so much when she was standing there that the book stuck to my arse when I got up.

She was a good woman. She never even punished me. She just gave me a 0 on the test, and we were able to drop one grade. Anyone who remembers her can confirm what I say: she was truly a sweet woman. I wish I could go back and tell her that.
