Not Your Older Brother's MLS
I searched and did not find it linked here; just thought some here would be interested. I don't have time to comment at the moment, since I am in an online class. Found it an interesting commentary on the growth of the MLS.

That's pretty nicely done.
MLS went into this with open eyes in 1996. They knew it would grow, they went into the big stadia because that's all there was available, and many of them were venues for 1994, which was part of the intial allure. But the plan was to build these new facilities if they could keep costs down, and not go under in the first five years.
Fiscal responsibility has been a major point in the MLS model, as well. They still don't pay all that well, from top-to-bottom, but it's going to come. The owners learned the lessons of the old NASL failure quite well, and built to prevent it from happening, and now look what we have, a continent wide league, with strong support and strong teams in places OTHER than New York and Los Angeles!

Good read. I particularly enjoyed the comment about the lack of MLS interest in the Southeast.

Yeah, I caught that as well. No surprise that football rules all here. Kind of surprised though you don't see an MLS team in Florida.
I mean, I understand them not being in Mississippi, Bama, or Arkansas, but, it seems Florida should have the fan base for it.

Both the Tampa Bay Mutiny and The Miami Fusion were initial MLS teams. They folded in 98.
Florida sports fans are notoriously bad fans across the board.

Good size for a fanbase right? But they are terrible sports fans.

Atlanta seems like the only area that could support a MLS team in the Southeast...a truly underrated international soccer city. The Triangle area of NC is pushing hard for a franchise, too.

Buy a halfway decent Mexican, and I don't see why Atlanta couldn't do 25k a game.

Orlando is pushing hard for a team. In fact, they are making a push to get the 20th franchise over New York...and Garber is at least meeting and listening with them.
Orlando City is averaging 6K a game in the third division. They have strong soccer management in place. All that remains is the stadium and work is being done on that issue too.
Contrast that with New York where MLS does not like the Cosmos structure...Garber does not like the management, the "lineage", nor their lack of financial ability. MLS wants another New York team...they just want someone else to run it.

Exactly. If only I had $100 million to buy an expansion franchise.

I'd be willing to go in on that with you.

The opportunities to make inroads into the SE seem to be NC. Not sure I agree about Atlanta. Are there a large enough hispanic population to support a team? Otherwise, realistically how much other support will you get?

There are a bunch of gays and hipsters in Atlanta too.

Exactly. Smack a stadium in Buckhead, and you've got a good attendance base.
Anytime Atlanta hosts big-time international friendlies, they sell well.
