Escort Services: How do they work? Costs?

While driving to work today I saw a truck with "maw and paw escort service" on the side of it. Obviously, it was following a larger truck with a mobile home on it.
What is the purpose of these types of trucks? The mobile home already had an "OVERSIZED LOAD" sign on it.
Also just out of curiosity, how much do these escorts make?

If a load is over I think 13' wide and or over 90' in length it is required by law. The escort will also stop traffic for the trucks to make turns etc. Depending on distance it's usually 2-300 bucks per escort and each escort can take 2 trucks.

The cost depends on whether you want just one or if you want one in the rear! Having one in the rear is called a DP, or double patrol. A DP is not required but I would recommend it. Always start out in the slow lane if your first one in the rear because it prevents confusion. As you get more comfortable with the DP you can kick it up a notch and explore new things. Have fun but be careful and make sure to deliver the load.

If your unit is too long, you need an escort. If your unit is too wide, you need an escort. If your load is just too damn big, you need an escort. If you want to take your load places it's normally not allowed, you need an escort. If you haven't moved your load for a long time, you may need multiple escorts. Any amount you pay an escort is strictly for their time being with you. Got it?
