It seems like every few years I see a friend from B.R. is in Houston treating cancer at MD Anderson. What do you think of starting an informal network of LA expats in Houston that provide support to LA folks and their families that are here temporarily for chemo etc. Thoughts? How would something like this look It was kind of inspired by the Cajun Navy I guess. Thanks in advance

Good for you TT for thinking of that! I’ve been there three times and may need to go again. Extended stays there can be hard on everyone. Hoping you come up with a network of Tiger helpers.

While you’re at it, can you work on getting H.E.B. to grow their footprint Eastward?

TIA

Form the group. Get a volunteer list. Appoint a few people as contact people for families in need. Build your organization as a non profit. Great idea.

My brother was treated at MD Anderson a few years back. There is a group called Dan’s House of Hope that is similar to what you described except it’s not Louisiana-centric. But may be worth checking out for ideas.

The president of the Houston alumni chapter is a director at MD Anderson. Might be a good place to start. There are several LSU alumni in leadership positions at MDACC.

Sounds like a great idea. Could you be more specific here. You talking about housing, general financial support?

I think Hogs for the Cause would be a helpful resource for this.

Keep us updated. Plenty of former LA folk around here that would love to participate.

Get in touch with the guys who made sure the Houston Petroleum Club got a bunch of Purple & Gold.

quote:

Eat your hearts out, Longhorns and Aggies! The LSU tigers have made their mark at the Petroleum Club of Houston and dubbed the sleek watering hole in the new digs the Bayou Bengal Bar. Thanks to the efforts of 12 LSU grads, all leaders in the energy industry, the brass plaque forever stakes their claim atop the 35-story Total Plaza.

While it doesn't shout LSU, the moniker makes its point, a friendly reminder of the impact grads of the Louisiana university have on Houston's energy picture.

As a director on the Petroleum Club board, LSU alumni Ron Neal, co-founder and co-owner of Houston Energy, spearheaded the initiative of raising the necessary funds to win the naming rights. The fellows, each passionate about his alma mater, reached deep into their ample pockets, their contributions earmarked for the Petroleum Club capital campaign.

In addition, New Orleans transplant John Havens, president of Seismic Exchange Inc. (SEI), garnered naming rights in his father's honor for the club's chef's table. Following last week's ribbon cutting at the Bayou Bengal Bar, the powerful dozen dined at the "P.C. Havens SEI Chef's Table."

As the tigers like to say "Love purple, live gold!" ...

I am here now! MD Anderson’s Social Workers gave me a ton of free housing options. Tough to get in, but not impossible.

I was in a recovery room Tuesday next to someone with a 318 number and yesterday in an infusion room next to someone from Lafayette. Louisiana folks come here in droves…as they should!

There are a ton of resources available to patients from Louisiana, but there is no centralized location. It would be a heavy lift to create all new avenues of help for La folks. Maybe a website or a hub of information where folks can communicate needs or available resources? I bet tapping those in MDA admin, as suggested by others, would be a great start.

Transportation, runners for small things (I needed seran wrap to cover a picc line while showering), housing, financial assistance, or just a friend. All good stuff TT. Let me know how I can help!

There are a lot of programs. Guys with money and free time will donate their plane and time to fly people back and forth from different areas to Houston free of charge. Often will offer to let you stay with them too.

People are really good when you give most of them a chance.

Well MD Anderson is arguably one of the top Cancer centers in the Country, or at least between NYC and LA, I'm sure people from all over the heartland go there. Not a bad idea though. I've heard of a few people with planes (small hobby planes/little company planes) that are part of a program that fly people to and from Houston for their treatment at MD Anderson. I think that is a program in Louisiana atleast, sort of like the people that fly organs around the state/region for hospitals.

This is a great idea. Emotional support is so important in this situation.

Also, I will add that people should get a supplemental Cancer plan. They aren't that expensive. Men, we have a 50/50 chance of getting cancer and women 1 out three. The cost financially can be devastating. Even more so when a child is diagnosed with Cancer. Being self employed, it certainly came in handy when I had my bout with cancer.

What a great idea! There is a group in Houston called Ground Angels that coordinates transportation on the ground for MDA parients. I think they often work with Pilots for Patients. Maybe start a 501C so that you can get matching funds from those of us that have that benefit available? You could probably raise funds with an auction...Imthink it sounds very promising.

That's a great idea. I go there every few months to get blood work and scans. I get my treatments locally. Luckily my brother lives in Houston and I stay with him when I go.

Like someone else said you can get a list of free places to stay nearby but they fill up really fast.

My wife just got back from MD Anderson Tuesday for her check up. She's been cancer free for 7 years now.

Sign her up.

Bump to note -- MD Anderson is partnering with Ochsner in the new cancer center on Highway 21 and I12 in Covington.
