Actually never claimed to be a big fan; I simply know more about the character than you do because, you know, I’ve actually played the games

But yes, my momentarily forgetting that her name is spelled Lara definitely invalidates that. You got me

The complaint from 2013 Tomb Raider was, there was no tomb raiding.

They made a point to re-emphasize tomb raiding in the next two.

Now it was not collecting treasure, but was an important part. Lara was collecting ancient knowledge, to better herself only.

It was in a non-woke time in gaming, now they are trying rewrite her reasons were woke progression of her life journey.

And because it turned her into a murder hobo.

I mean, I would argue you’re no longer “raiding” the tombs in the later games. Now, could this be retro-woking? I suppose. But I certainly don’t think a small snippet from the table top pamphlet is definitive evidence of that.

He doesn’t, because again, he’s actually played the fricking games

One will note that you hear her name for more than you read it when you play the games more than you read clickbait news articles about her

You also edited and still didn't correct it so I'm not sure you actually know it as well as you claim.

I never said I'm an expert on Lara Croft. I just said that the character is a tomb raider. You know, because her entire existence has been Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

So when you take the tomb raiding out because of

quote:

to escape a history wounded by colonialism

you've fundamentally changed the character past "charcter development" into no longer being the same character.

I can't wait to play the next Halo where Master Chief has a beer with the Jiralhanae after a long battle. I also can't wait to play the next Mario where he forgives Bowser.

Incredibly weak, bullshite cop out. Play the games and then we can talk. Darth is being a bit of a political jackass in my opinion, but at least he knows enough for his opinion to be worth discussing. You, on the other hand, are just an ignorant political jackass

Nah, I’m defending games that I thought were pretty good. Not great, but good. And now here we are, talking about the series being ruined with wokeness because of a tabletop pamphlet snippet, when the last game came out over half a decade ago. It’s silly, sensationalist clickbait nonsense.

It’s usually not a good sign when a thread posted on the PT with the title “Woke is killing an icon - ‘TOMB RAIDER SERIES TO ESCAPE ITS COLONIAL PAST’” is then cross posted over here because it didn’t get enough engagement over there

And yet the game reboots did quite well. Weirdly not ruined…

I agree and I played and enjoyed them but that was also 2013ish.

It’s 2024 and they have now made this statement. How do you think this is going to end? Do you think it was smart of them to say what they said and use terms like “colonizers”….or do you think they should have just kept making the game and kept quiet?

I think I would be more concerned if this were a PR statement made by Crystal Dynamics about the video games. What we are actually discussing is a statement made by Evil Hat in their pamphlet for the table top game, basically saying “this is the direction Crystal Dynamics has taken the series, and now we are taking it even further!”

The series may very well turn into woke dogshit in the future, but I just don’t see any reason in the OP to be concerned about that just yet.

I am, but this simply because they are injecting that into the games. Sometimes a game, should just be a game. Lara is dealing with some major issues in the game world, she does not have time to worry about the impacts of colonialism. Trinity, her father's death, dead Japanese queens trying to take over her best friend, and trying to get Jonah a date with a cute Peruvian girl; she had a lot going on.

Hopefully Crystal Dynamics keeps Evil Hat Productions in check while going for this unified Lara. Reboot Lara was a perfect example of a strong female character, they do not need to give her purple hair.

I posted both, and was going to post it in both spots from the beginning. I honestly was curious where would get the most traction. I expected better from PT, but it has been a day for Trump and the legal battles.

I honestly think we are on the same page. Beyond my issue in the first game of them turning her into a murder hobo like they wanted to create a case study on ludonarrative dissonance, I enjoyed the reboot trilogy. They weren’t great, but they were solid, and I really didn’t find them to be “woke”.

Because of what I said in my post above this one, I’m currently not concerned. Could that turn out to be naïve? Sure. But life’s too short to worry about it in advance. I’ll cross that bridge if and when we come to it.

I know, and I was mostly just fricking with you. Outside of when you’re quite intentionally engaging in political trolling, I generally enjoy our interactions, even when we don’t agree
