Do you believe Perkins at mike is set in stone or will he be moved around situationally?

Because if I’m an OC going up against Harold in the middle I’m going old school. That is, put a TE in the halfback position or motion him into halfback position, double team the DL at the point of attack, allow the TE to take out Harold, and allow my big RB to stumble for 4-5 yards or make the safety miss and break it for a nice run.

Do you think situationally Harold is rotated with Weeks or Penn if offenses start having success in the middle with heavy set running plays?

Didn’t we already try him there last season and it was a disaster?

He is going to be used at WILL not MIKE. And he will be moved around and used in creative ways to utilize his athleticism and speed.

I believe his handlers have expressed their desire to put him at MLB under threat of transfer if the staff doesnt. I think it's part of the reason we landed Baker. House clearly wasn't getting it done.

Time will tell if it pays off for Perk.

Everything was a disaster last season so it’s hard to gauge it.

Yeah, last year is a terrible baseline to compare Perkins potential success at mike (or will). Looking back it's hard to say that Perkins was out of position at the start of the season because the defense did not improve when they moved Perk around. The entire defensive approach from Matt House at every level of the defense was terrible.

If I'm not mistaken nobody ever said Perkins was going to the Mike. They said he was going inside. In the 3-3-5 (not stack) or the 4-2-5 there are 2 inside LB positions. The mike traditionally will line up over the guard to the strong side and be responsible for the strong side A gap. The Will lines up over the tackle to the weak side and be responsible for the B gap. I would imagine Perkins will at the Will backer.

Thanks for the clarification.

IMO, you are one of the better posters here so have no idea why the downvotes on your OP...good question IMO. And extra points to you for saying "in the middle" instead of football jargon like MIKE or WILL or JACK or JILL or whatever.

My take as I said one time is the best use of Perkins is to line him up in the 2nd level somewhere...close enough to the LOS however so that the offense doesn't know whether he will stay there or blitz. And after the blocking calls are made...obvious when the center has quit pointing...you blitz him at that point if you want to do that. But lining him up on the LOS against a blocker isn't going to work. The OC and OL coaches have figured out if you put a body on him, he isn't overpowering anyone.

The Will backer position in the 3-3-5 or the 4-2-5 is a very easy spot to blitz somebody from. Very easy to move him around and allow his to get after the QB where the defense isn't sure where he's coming from.

Which is what teams started to do when he was playing as an edge, hence he needed to be stood up somewhere else. Realistically, he needs to put on 20 pounds, move to safety, or be a situational player at the next level.

Yeeeeaaappppp.

I keep repeating it over and over. If Perkins was ever picked up on a blitz, he was either blocked 20 yards downfield or he was stood up and put on his arse. All but 1 of his successfull Sacks from last year he came through untouched.

I believe it's set in stone and he will be moved around situationally. That's what modern defenses do with their linebackers.

The point you are trying to make is a valid one. Perkins has indeed been weak as a run gap linebacker to this point in his career. I feel a lot of that is the read and react philosophy of the House defense, and him changing roles three different times. His lack of size didnt help.

It’s obvious he wants to be in the middle. He has the leverage
