Unlike today's Alabama which has only had two undefeated seasons under Saban...
It was huge back then to have gone undefeated no matter who you played.
Saban isn't winning all these Nattys in the 80s or 90s.
BCS, playoffs, changed everything and teams get mulligans and mass media pimping.

Well Washington didn’t win their conference so your argument is out the window
You do know SC beat Washington?
That was their one loss, and they finished #2 in the polls. Still better than BYU that year imo.

Tell that to Joe Paterno who saw two of his teams have back to back undefeated seasons in the late-60s with absolutely nothing to show for it. They finished 11-0 and ranked #2 in both 1968 and 1969.

BYU played 1 ranked (at the time) team that ended up being 3-7-1. They played 4 teams that would end up with a winning record. They dominated one of those teams, Tulsa who finished 6-5. Beat Hawaii (7-4) 18-13, Air Force (8-4) 30-25, and Utah (6-5-1) 24-14.
There was, in part, a narrative at the time about needing someone from one of the "other" divisions (G5 now) to have shot at a #1 finish.
ETA: combined W-L_T of opponents - 61-85-3

At least our 2017 team went 4-0 against teams that finished in the Top 25. Beat 8 teams with 7+ wins.
BYU’s beat 0 teams that finished ranked and only 2 teams with 7+ wins.
BYU’s beat 0 teams that finished ranked and only 2 teams with 7+ wins.

The writers boxed themselves in. They had BYU #1 going into the bowl games. Back then, if you were #1 and won your bowl game, you were voted #1 in the final polls.
This is what happens when you don't downvote teams when they barely beat shitty teams.

vs. Wyoming (6-6)

This helped to accelerate the conversation of the flawed CFB National Champion system,

Yeah but they were the best 3-7-1 team of all time!

That was the 60s where the writers thought Texas, California, the Midwest and parts of the South was where football was best.
East Coast football was looked down upon.
It opened up nationwide in the 80s and 90s...which is why we got BYU.
Prejudice and presumptions went by the wayside and it became undefeated. Then in the the 2010s we resorted back to prejudice and presumptions.

1984 was also the perfect storm for a surprise champion. I think seven teams ranked in the preseason top 10 finished with at least 4 losses.
That opened the door for a team like BYU to climb to the top of the polls. BYU was unranked to start the season. They beat a 3-7-1 Pitt team and a 5-6 Baylor team, and were ranked in the top 10 after only 2 weeks. From there they slowly made their way to the #1 spot as teams in front of them lost throughout the season.
Washington was ranked #1 for several weeks, but lost to USC in late November. They dropped all the way down to #8, so they had to jump a lot of teams to get back to the top, and they only had WSU and their bowl game to do it.
Florida was the only other team besides Washington to finish with only 1 loss, but they also had a tie and were ineligible to play in a bowl.
Oklahoma finished the regular season with a loss and a tie and ranked #2, but lost the Orange Bowl to Washington.
The Orange Bowl win over OU was impressive, but that’s the only good team Washington beat. The rest of their schedule was filled with bad to average teams except for USC, and they lost that game.

I'm sure somewhere the Alabama Crimson Tide already claims the 1984 NC anyway so I doubt this matters

It opened up because the NCAA did its best to build parity into the game after a handful of teams dominated in the 60s and 70s. New rules made it harder for any one team to dominate. We got BYU because there was quite literally no one else left to vote #1. The AP and the Coaches didn't want to vote them #1 but their hands were tied because there quite literally was no one else.

I’ve watched quite a few older games on YouTube and the 1984 games were interesting. Along with a wild year of top ranked losses, the media was NOT silent on the BYU situation. ABC literally had an 8 or 900 number set up for viewers on Saturdays to call and cast their vote on whether or not BYU deserves the number one spot. I want to say that happened in multiple weeks. Doubt that ever happened before, or since… until the internet age.

Saban isn't winning all these Nattys in the 80s or 90s.
It was also easier to go undefeated in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Fewer regular season games, no playoff semifinal, no conference championship for most of that time, bowl ties preventing top matchups in bowl games, and split titles.
It’s harder to win a natty in the playoff era, undefeated or not.

The current system will never give us teams or stories like BYU and they want examples like that out of your memory so they’re never talked about.

I understand why people say it’s harder this but it’s not harder per se, just different. Some one will win it every year meaning someone will finish beating 2 top 4 teams every year.
Without the SECCG this year Bama would be out. So it’s a “harder” game that some team in the past didn’t have to play but also gives teams a second chance that teams in the past did not have.
Coaches like Bowden or Carroll may have more titles if they got second chances.
